Nokoru: I asked Imonoyama Foundation*'s investigators to look for the girl and the man. The result is most intriguing. One witness reported seeing a man carrying a wounded girl several minutes after we left. A few minutes later, the buildings around that alley were destroyed in a fire. The investigators say a gas pipe under the alley exploded and caused the fire. *"zaibatsu" has many translations. For CCD, I translate it as Foundation. Akira: What an unlucky accident! Nokoru: An accident that conveniently destroys the scene of a crime is unlikely to be an accident, Akira. Suoh: Are you saying- Nokoru: It is obvious. The man kidnapped the girl and hid in a secret place to avoid discovery. After we left, he destroyed the scene of the crime to prevent us from discovering his hideout. Unfortunately for him, that very action confirms that something nefarious indeed took place. To kidnap and harm a girl is already unforgivable, but to also destroy people's homes and workplaces.... The CLAMP Campus Detective Team must stop this evil criminal! Akira: Kaichou is so noble! Suoh: <sigh> Then we best start by returning to the alley to look for clues. Nokoru: Good idea, Suoh. Let's go. -- [Nokoru, Suoh, and Akira are in the alley looking for clues. The fire has died out from the surrounding building, leaving the rubble caused by collapsed materials. Everything is still wet from the fire-fighting.] Akira: This is very unfortunate. Suoh: Any clue must have been destroyed by the fire or washed away by water. Nokoru: Not true. Suoh: Did you find something? Nokoru: Yes, observe. Akira: It's just bits of burnt paper. Nokoru: Correct. While most are burnt and washed away, there are a lot of shredded and torn paper in this alley. Trapped under the rubble, some fragments still survive, if a bit wet. Akira: Wow. But what kind of clue does bits of paper give, Kaichou? Nokoru: I'm not sure. The ink remnants on both the chars and the fragments suggests some kind of calligraphy... but they don't look like common Japanese calligraphy.... Suoh: I know. They are ofuda*. Like the one they give in temples. But these are not just the usual ofuda. The mantras look like those used by onmyouji**. *ofuda=paper charms **onmyouji=Japanese sorcerers. Nokoru: Excellent, Suoh. How do you know that? Suoh: Ah, part of my training as a Takamura ninja includes ninja lore. While we do not practise magic, part of ninja lore includes onmyouji spells. Nokoru: Hmmm, since these bits of paper were not here when we were here the first time, we can conclude that the criminal or the girl must have left them before the fire started. Suoh: I see. And since the spells on the ofuda are advanced onmyouji spells, then the girl or the criminal must be someone who seriously practices magic. Akira: There aren't many people who practices onmyouji magic nowadays. It should be easier to find their identities now. [Nokoru, Suoh, and Akira are back in CLAMP Campus. The three is in CLAMP Campus Supercomputer Lab. Akira is busy typing at the supercomputer while Suoh and Nokoru impatiently watch behind his back.] Nokoru: Well? Akira: The Imonoyama database is the most complete in the world. In addition to its own data, it also incorporates data from all major corporations in the world. Akira: Maybe this is a temporary office until they finish rebuilding. Nokoru: <shrug> This place looks empty. Let's look inside. Suoh? Suoh: This lock is simple. It should be easy to pick it. There, it's open. Akira: It's dark. Nokoru: I have a flashlight. [takes out flashlight and turns it on] This should help. Voice: Don't bother. Akira: Who's that? [The entire warehouse lights up. But instead of a warehouse Nokoru, Suoh, and Akira find themselves in a big but empty lobby. Suoh: This can't be inside a warehouse! It's bigger than the outside! Nokoru: [looks around and notices something] The exit! It's disappearing! [Nokoru, Suoh, and Akira try to reach the door, but it's too late. The door already disappeared.] Voice: First you enter without knocking, and now you're leaving without saying goodbye? How rude. Nokoru: Impossible! Suoh: Kaichou, this is an illusion. I never thought it's possible, but this man is a real magician. Nokoru: Illusion? Suoh: Onmyouji spells include very powerful illusions. Takamura ninja know a few tricks, but they are nothing compared to a true onmyouji. Akira: And in an illusion, anything can happen! I understand now. Voice: You three are very quick. I salute you. Nokoru: But if this is an illussion, then it isn't real. [Nokoru tries to walk through where the door used to be, but he hits a solid wall.] Nokoru: Ouch. Voice: [laughes] Even though it is an illusion, mentally you will still receive its effects as if it was reality. Suoh: Show yourself! [A figure appears in front of the fountain in the center of the lobby.] Man: Before I inquire to the identities of my esteemed guests, allow me to introduce myself. I am Sakurazuka Seishirou of the Cherry Barrow* clan. Is that enough or should I tell you my blood type and horoscope too? For some reason teens always want to know these things. *Seishirou actually said Sakurazuka of the Sakurazuka clan. In Japanese the double meaning would have been clear but in English it would sound repetitive. So I translated the clan name to make the meaning clear. Nokoru: I am Imonoyama Nokoru. Suoh: Takamura Suoh. Akira: And I'm Ijyuin Akira. Nokoru: We are the CLAMP Campus Detective Team. Seishirou: Esteemed guests indeed. The youngest son of the world famous Imonoyama family, the heir of Takamura ninja clan, and if I'm not mistaken, three years elected "Young* Most Desirable Male". *Young is a very popular teenager magazine in Japan. Nokoru: And you, Sakurazuka-san, must be the current Sakurazukamori*. You are said to be the best assassin ever. *Cherry Barrow Guardian. The Sakurazukamori is the head of the clan. To be the Sakurazukamori you must kill the previous one. Refer to X Character Files: Sakurazuka Seishirou for more info. Nokoru: This illusion is impressive. I thought the bit about the Sakurazuka clan using onmyouji spells to assassinate their target was an exaggeration but I was obviously mistaken. Seishirou: Obviously. So why do you enter the sleeping lion's den? Nokoru: CLAMP Campus Detective Team is dedicated solely to help women. We know you kidnapped a girl and destroyed property. Release the girl and turn yourself in! Seishirou: Thank you, but I will have to decline. However, I do not have any business with you, so for my counter-offer... [The warehouse door reappears.] Seishirou: Leave now unharmed. Suoh: Kaichou, don't trust him. They say the Sakurazukamori never leaves a witness alive. Nokoru: A lady's rescue is our business! Seishirou: As you wish. [turns and disappears] Akira: He disappeared! Suoh: The door is gone too. We need to figure a way to escape. Nokoru: Later. We rescue the girl first. -- [The CLAMP Campus Detective Team steps out of the elevator. The elevator light indicates Floor 60 and there is a sign saynig "The Observatory".] Akira: The elevator moved so fast my ears still hurt. Suoh: Kaichou, why are we searching from top to bottom instead of from the bottom up? Nokoru: Criminals usually try to run away from the good guys. Since the farthest point from where we started is the top floor, it's most likely he's here. Akira: Kaichou, Takamura-senpai, I feel like I've been here before. Suoh: I KNEW the lobby looks familiar. This IS the Sunshine 60 that got destroyed in a quake. I didn't recognize it at first because it was so empty. Nokoru: But if it was destroyed, what are the salarymen and couples doing here? [points to crowd] [The crowd, a mixture of salarymen, office ladies, teenagers, and a few security guards, turns and advances toward the three.] Suoh: Illusion? [The crowd turns menacing. A few grew claws while security guards pull their guns out and the salarymen drew swords out of their suits.] Akira: Illusions or no, this is not good. [One of the security guards aims his gun at Nokoru.] Suoh: Kaichou! Watch out! [throws shuriken] [The shuriken embeds itself in the gun, ruining and sending it careening on the floor.] Nokoru: Thank you. [Flashback. Suoh's Mother: You must always have your weapons. You never know when you will be in an emergency. Make sure you are always ready to fight. "For the someone that you will meet some day."] Suoh: {I'm glad I listened.} [Nokoru pulls out his flashlight and throws it to Akira. He then pulls his pen and cell-phone.] Nokoru: Akira, use this! <The Imonoyama Survival and Protection Kit includes many useful gadgets. Among them are a flashlight, a pen, and a cellular phone. The flashlight looks and works like an ordinary flashlight but by breaking the protective cover and pressing a special button, it can be used as a non-lethal taser. When fully charged, the battery is good for 10 charges. Similarly, by twisting and pressing the pen a certain way, the pen can extends its tip and part of the casing springs out to become a handguard. In this matter, the pen is as effective as a rapier in the hand of a good fencer. The cell-phone can double as a clock, compass, beeper, calculator, pager, and many other things, but by pressing a certain key combination, a port opens, allowing the owner to shoot three flare rounds, useful for summoning help or blinding an attacker. Nokoru's wallet is also part of the kit and has many useful and interesting features, but that's another story.> [Akira zaps a monster. [Nokoru disarms a katana-wielding salaryman and draws an "N" on his suit.] [Suoh throws a guard into a bunch of salarymen.] [Akira dodges a sword and electrifies the sword, sending the swordman into convulsions.] [Suoh slices a gun into pieces using a captured katana.] [Nokoru blinds several monsters by firing a flare at the floor in front of the monsters.] [Suoh throwing the last monster into a pile while Akira zaps the whole pile and Nokoru strikes a pose in front of the pile.] [Fanfare, balloons, and ticker tapes while the trio makes the V sign.] Nokoru: That's the last of them. [The pile explodes with a loud bang and a lot of smoke. The smoke quickly clears.] Akira: They turned into papers! Nokoru: Those are paper charms! Suoh: Shikigami*. I never thought it's possible.... *Shikigami are spirit servants. Their shapes and uses vary widely. In this case, the shikigami were transformed paper charms and thus when defeated, they revert back to their paper form. Nokoru: We've been outsmarted. Our enemy is a most dangerous man. He knew we were going to search this floor first, so he set up a trap. Luckily we managed to defeat the trap. C'mon, we must find the girl. If necessary we'll search every floor one by one. -- [The trio steps out from the elevator. The elevator light indicates Floor 10 this time.] Akira: I'm glad this illusion has working elevators. Nokoru: [nods] Imagine having to search all floors using the stairway. Suoh: I'm worried. We're already in tenth floor and we still haven't found him or the girl. What if they aren't here? Nokoru: They're here. I can feel them. Akira: [looks at aquariums*] The illusion even has fish. He's thorough. *Sunshine 60 does have an indoor aquarium at the tenth floor Nokoru: The girl is nearby. Nokoru: I saw you running away from a man from five kilometers away. I gave chase, but he escaped. We tracked him to this place and although it's dark, I followed your fragrance and listened for your breathing. Yuzuriha: [smiles] You have a great sense of humor. Yuzuriha: Thank you for rescuing me, but we should try to find a way out quickly. The Sakurazukamori will harm you if he finds you with me. Suoh: We fought the shikigami earlier. It was hard, but we won. Yuzuriha: That's better than I expected. Still, it's best to avoid him. Oh, have you seen Inuki? Nokoru: Inuki? Yuzuriha: My dog. He tried to protect me but he got hurt. No. Seishirou: From long ago I could not feel any difference between living and dead things. Earth, humanity, why should I care if one lives and the other dies? But I am the Sakurazukamori. When it stops, the Team finds themselves back in the warehouse.] Akira: The illusion is gone. Suoh: The girl must have done it. Nokoru: She's still in the illusion. We have to help her! Suoh: But how? Akira: Kaichou, I believe we're going back into the illusion. Look. [The shimmering starts again. The Team finds themselves back in front of the cherry tree again.] Yuzuriha: You brought them into my kekkai! How... no, a Dragon of Heaven might be able to do it. But why? Seishirou: Leave them free and they will only come back and try to spoil my plans again. Why should I risk that? [starts chanting] Yuzuriha: No! I have to find Inuki quick. [The shikigami attack the Team.] Seishirou: Now, Ojou-chan*, where were we? *Little girl. -- [Seishirou gestures. An energy wave travels on the ground, reducing everything in its path to rubble. Yuzuriha jumps to avoid it.] Yuzuriha: I will not... [Seishirou gestures again. An energy beam snakes toward Yuzuriha. With some difficulty, Yuzuriha manages to evade it.] Yuzuriha: ...I will not lose. Seishirou: Without that inugami* you're powerless. How long can you evade my attacks? [gestures again] *Dog spirit. Seishirou's hawk apears out of the shadows and flies at the Trio. They manage to avoid it and Suoh nails it with a shuriken, but Nokoru is grazed.] Akira: Kaichou! Suoh: Kaichou! Nokoru: I'm alright. Akira: Kaichou, he's too powerful. Nokoru: I know. We have to figure out a way. Suoh: Kaichou, run away while I distract him. Nokoru: No, I won't leave you. Akira: What are we going to do? Yuzuriha: I'll handle this now. Because you distracted Sakurazukamori, Inuki had enough time to find me and breach this illusion. I can feel he is near. [shouts] Inuki, attack! Seishirou: You can't use the same trick twice-- Seishirou: [alarmed] Something's behind! Seishirou: Gyaah! [A blur of grey wounds Seishirou's shoulder. Seishirou jumps away, but the grey shadow follows. Unable to shake the shadow loose, Seishirou conjures a murder of crows and dirccts them to attack Yuzuriha and the Team instead.] Yuzuriha: Inuki! [Inuki breaks off pursuit to form a barrier protecting Yuzuriha and the Team. Seishirou's crows hit the barrier harmlessly and vanish. Inuki quickly returns to chasing Seishirou, but he's nowhere to be seen.] Yuzuriha: Are you alright? Akira: Amazing power. Suoh: He disappeared. Yuzuriha: He ran away. It's probably best.
