I did not know the mailing lists rules about crossovers
not related to CLAMP, but as I wrote this it became much
more about the detectives than about Watari, so I am
hoping it is acceptable.

It was late in the evening. Homework was completed, practice was
long since over, and loafing had not yet begun. The three leaders
of the elementary division student council sat at their desks in
their main office.
Akira Ijyuin, though he had a computer upon his desk, looked
a the papers in his hands and spread over his desk and
keyboard with what on another's face would have been discomfort,
but the kindly boy's countenance revealed what his friends
knew to be intense concentration on a problem that would
have made grown men cry. He loosed a gust of air through pursed
lips that sent a paper flying towards the floor. He put his abacus
down to get the paper only to see it handed to him by elegant
tan fingers. "Thank you." He picked up his abacus and realized
with a start that the paper had never touched the floor. "Takamura-
senpai has excellent reflexes."
Suoh returned to his desk with a stoicism that would have been
satisfactory to Seneca and resumed scanning the electronic archives.
At a knock on the door it was Nokoru Imonoyama who answered, his
voice made loud by the rooms silence, "Please come in."
The door opened slowly as a very tall man bent to reach the knob.
"Ah, I was looking for the CLAMP Campus Detectives."
Nokoru looked confused for a moment, but soon regained himself,
"We are the detectives."
"Oh, good!" The man's voice rose an octave on "good."
Suoh stood to flank his kaichou as the older boy came around
his desk to speak with their visitor. Akira began to tidy his
desk.
"I was looking to commission the great detectives. You see I
lost something on campus, and I heard you were the ones to call
for help." Most of the man's waist length blond hair escaped his
hair ribbon and was falling over his shoulders.
"I hope that we can help you," Nokoru said steadily.
"Kaichou," Suoh's golden eyes were worried.
"Oh, is it alright?" He looked at the blue haired boy doubtfully.
Suoh coughed slightly and stepped forward, bowing, "I am not
accustomed to taking requests for detective work from men. I
did not mean any affront."
The man considered this. His eyes moved over to Akira's wide
gray eyes as the boy took his place to Nokoru's right. The doe
brown eyes looked at the specially made low desks and squat
couch. As they moved back to the boys, they were filled with
tears. "I did not mean to intrude. I will return when I am
a woman."
Nokoru moved forward quickly, "No, please do sit down." He
reached up and took the man's hand, leading him to the yellow
sofa. He held out a handkerchief from his breast pocket and
gestured to Akira for a glass of water. "We would be glad
to take your case."
The tall man removed his glasses, and wiped his almond eyes.
"Oh, thank you. I thought that since I wasn't a woman, yet,
that...Thank you!" He smiled in spite of his tears.
All three boys stopped. Suoh stared openly at the long legged
visitor. Akira looked confused but handed the man his water.
"Kaichou," Suoh moved leaned near his friend's blond mop, "We
don't know what the case is yet."
Nokoru appeared not to have heard. He sat next to his slim
guest and patted the hand that laid on the couch. "We will find
it for you, I promise."
The caller collected himself and put his small round glasses
squarely on his nose. "My name is Watari Yutaka." He sniffled.
"I lost 003 in a notepad while I was visiting the chemistry
labs."
Suoh had a notepad and pen in hand, "When did you last see it?"
"Yesterday, at lunch. I was sitting under a tree drawing your
school mascot. The one on the little island in the middle of
a lake?" He spoke with inflection that made the statement a
question.
Three heads of unruly hair nodded.
"I thought there was something odd about it, I just had to
keep a picture of it." His accent was a course southern that
had it's own appeal.
Nokoru looked at him intently, but nodded for him to go on.
"003 is always with me, but I stretched and looked at the
clock tower because I thought lunch was ending, and when I
turned, it was gone.
"I had assumed it would be along a bit later...but now it's
been so long." The delicate chin quivered. "I never realized
how much I need him."
"Him?" The dark haired boy asked.
"Yes. I think it's a him..." Watari looked confused for a
moment, "I never really checked."
Nokoru spoke quickly as he saw the eyes shimmering like
polished wood in the light. "We will find him." He was resolute.
"Oh, thank you."
"What does he look like?" Suoh's navy blue head moved up as he
spoke.
"He fits in the palm of my hand...oh, 003 is an owl."
The three boys sweat dropped. "I think there are a lot of
owls on campus" the raven-haired boy spoke slowly, so he would
not upset their guest again. "Maybe he is visiting one of the
others."
Blond eyebrows moved down and the stranger's eyes were
intense, "He wouldn't do that. He loves me."
"Of course," Nokoru soothed. "We will start working on your
case right away." He stood up, indicating the others should do
likewise.
When Watari was on his feet the tallest of the boys did not
reach his belt. "Thank you, so very much." His smile grew
wistful, "I thought for a moment that I wouldn't be able to
ask for your help until I was a woman."
The young people smiled strangely at him, but Watari did not
notice, he was accustomed to having no one really understand.
"Please leave Suoh your contact information so we can tell
you when we discover something."
"Oh no, I am on vacation from work, he smiled radiantly, "I
have been given permission to work with the chemistry and
bio-chem departments at CLAMP University on my personal
project."
Nokoru looked very interested suddenly, "Oh, I didn't realize
you were a scientist."
Watari struck a dramatic pose, his feet wide apart and index
finger raised, "I will discover the sex-change potion!"
Suoh raised his eyebrows but did not speak. Akira's eyes
were wide and his mouth dropped, and Nokoru wished the
eccentric man luck as he ushered him out of the room.
The blond head turned to his friends after the door closed.
His arms were crossed over his chest and his fan was out.
"Suoh, didn't the chemistry department start reporting explosions
yesterday?"
"It could be a coincidence."
Nokoru nodded and moved to his computer. There he pulled up a
map of the campus. He zeroed in on a the lake with a statue of
the school mascot on an island. "To see the clock tower from
a standing position, behind him, I assume," he moved the mouse,
"he would have had to have been..." he double clicked. "Here."
"There are a number of trees in that area." Suoh looked at the
map over Nokoru's shoulder.
"And we don't know if the owl will still be around," Akira
looked doubtfully out the window.
"Well, it won't hurt to take a look now, anyway" Nokoru walked
to the coat closet, Suoh and Akira close behind him.
*************
The detectives wandered through the trees, using their flash
lights to search the tree.
Suoh stepped near his leader, "Kaichou, I don't mean to press
the issue, but it is unusual for a man to request our help."
"Yes," Nokoru moved the beam from a beautiful specimen of
aspen to the ground as he spoke to his friend, "but it does
not mean that we shouldn't help him."
"And besides, he's going to be a woman," Akira supplied
helpfully.
"Yes, Kaichou, about that," Suoh started.
Nokoru laughed and turned off the his beam. "I didn't realize
who he was until he said that. Watari Yutaka is famous for
his eccentricity, but he is brilliant."
"Ah," Suoh did not sound convinced that the blubbering man in
the office had been brilliant in any field.
"He's the chemist who is also a doctor from off campus! I heard
the college ladies in class talking about him!" Akira gray eyes
showed dark in the moonlight. "They said he was scrumptious!
I wonder if I should ask him for some recipes?"
Suoh and Nokoru were suddenly standing very close together.
"My it is a nice night." Nokoru started.
"It certainly is." Suoh looked directly at his older friend,
liquid amber eyes avoiding his surroundings.
"We should probably start searching again in the morning!"
Nokoru seemed not to be trying to get out of work so much as
to get away.
"Yes, let's!" For once Suoh agreed entirely.
The two older boys said goodnight and Suoh walked with Akira
towards the school subway system. "Takamura-senpai."
"Yes, Ijyuin," Suoh loved his friend dearly, but their were
times he felt it would be better not to speak to the boy.
"Is it possible that the owl went back to the lab," he asked,
his alabaster skin shone in the moonlight, occasionally picking
up a warm orange tint from a streetlight as they passed.
"Some birds are trained to go to certain places."
"I was thinking that it was like a dog," He stopped walking
and turned back to Suoh who's head had lowered. "Dogs look for
their people where they smell they had last been. Perhaps his
owl went looking for him."
"Perhaps." Suoh agreed, "We'll try the lab tomorrow morning."
"Good night, Takamura-senpai," Akira walked down the subway
steps.
Suoh waved and continued walking up the path they had been
on. Something that Watari had said was bothering him, but he
didn't know what yet.
*************
The CLAMP University chemistry lab was a bastion of efficiency
under most circumstances. Today however, a newcomer to the
school had drawn quite a crowd.
Ladies, and a few gentlemen, in smart casual clothes and a
few in high necked school uniforms stood in a circle around a
blond man wearing a black shirt laced up the front, or would if
he had tied it. His hair was tied with a large white bow, and
his shirt laced up the front, or would if he had tied it. His
round spectacles did not mar or hide his face in any way, but
enhanced it by adding a reserved look to his expressive face.
"Please stand back; this is a matter of trial and error," He
said as he let liquid fall drop by drop into a large beaker he
held.
When the beaker exploded. His un-buttoned lab coat flew out
behind him and his hair rose. The blond gentleman coughed, but
did not look discouraged. He did, though look angry. He turned
around and poked his finger a college ruled notebook on the
table behind him.
"Yutaka-san," at Nokoru's opening words the female population
of the room turned around. There were a number of squeals and
a few women put their hands to their cheeks. "We needed a bit
more information to continue our search."
Suoh pulled his notepad from his inner breast pocket and opened
it walked towards the smoke-covered scientist. Several girls
backed out of his way, but not out of range. He ignored them
and spoke to Watari, "If you don't mind, could you please come
back to the site where you misplaced your pet?"
"Ah, yes. It is a good point to stop, isn't it?" Watari closed
his notebook and gathered his sketchpad. He looked in the air
around his head as though expecting to find something, then
sighed and looked down. His gaze fell on bits of broken glass.
"I'll come back to this..."
***************
"Please show us where you last saw 003, Yutaka-san" Nokoru used
his hand to indicate the area he had deduced Watari must have
been sitting.
"Please, call me Watari, or Watari-chan," Watari's lips moved
into a smile.
Nokoru smiled in return and was not disappointed to see the tall
bishounen move to a spot quite near the tree he had supposed was
the correct location.
"I sat here, and drew the blow-fish...And then I stretched and
turned to the clock," Watari demonstrated, his long arms moving
into the air, then gracefully pushing out behind him as he turned
towards the central tower of CLAMP Campus.
"And when you turned again, where was the owl?" Suoh had his
pencil poised over the pad.
"Hmm, I don't know. I leaned down for my papers," He moved his
impossibly long fingers towards the pads he had put on the
ground.
"Is there anything else you remember about the day? Birds
flying in the area, or children playing?" Akira asked helpfully.
"No, the only birds were in the blow-fish's mouth," Watari pointed
to the nest across the water.
"Thank you." Nokoru smiled brightly.
Watari sighed and put his hand behind his head. "Do you believe
in magic, Imonoyama-kun?"
"Magic?"
"Magic and the walking dead?"
Akira looked particularly uncomfortable. "Ghosts are just stories
to scare us."
"Hmmm..." Watari waved, "Then, I think I will clean the chem lab
before moving onto bio-chem this afternoon."
"What an odd man," Suoh watched the bright hair change hues
as the thin man walked under the trees.
Nokoru didn't answer, but walked towards the place Watari had
been standing. "I don't know about ghosts or magic, but I think
that Watari may not have lost 003 after all."
**********
"Takamura-senpai" Akira pulled on his friend's sleeve, a catch
in his voice.
"Yes."
Akira didn't say anything, but Suoh saw that the younger boy
was going to cry. Akira inclined his head towards the sofa
where he had just served tea.
Nokoru sat on the golden couch in the detectives office, sipping
milk tea. He looked down at the white napkin on his crossed legs
and compared the color to the cream on the table.
"Kaichou," Suoh looked troubled. "There is something odd about
Watari-san."
"Yes." Nokoru did not move. He seemed to contemplate the pattern
of milk and tea swirling in his cup. He did not stir it, but
suddenly looked up. "Suoh," his voice was passionate. "there are
some things in this world that science cannot explain."
Suoh did not answer, but looked at the oceans of blue that were
Nokoru's eyes. They were uncommonly narrowed in concentration.
"I want to know why Watari-san thinks he can make a potion for
a biological change." Nokoru's eyes sought Akira. "I know
that such things are not possible, but this man's reputation
is great. His name has been well known in the scientific
community as long as I can remember."
Suoh frowned, "He is a young man."
"And I can think of no explanation for his youth. But Rijichou
has allowed him to use our campus."
**********
An elegant lady with black hair demurely hid her lower face
behind a fan as she looked a the boy before her. His smiling
azure eyes gave no hint of the mischief she knew could lie
within. "Our school detectives are most serious, lately."
"Yes, Rijichou."
"Work goes well, I trust." She slid her letters onto the
board before her.
The boy added her points. "There is some concern about outsiders
on campus."
"Ah," She pulled six pieces of wood from the cloth bag that sat
between them.
"It is the scientist, Watari Yutaka-san, Rijichou."
"A charming gentleman," She hid her smile and watched his face
intently.
"He speaks of magic and a lost owl."
"Nokoru-san." His eyes looked into hers with expectation. "There
is much more on this campus than science can determine." Her
traditional robes were vermilion, and her hair stylized but her
words were modern.
"Yes, Rijichou."
She waited. He was too clever to lead blatantly, but he had never
before inquired into such things.
He put down four square letter blocks, attaching them to her
newest word.
"Guard. An excellent word."
"Thank you," his fair head bowed at the compliment, but his face
remained neutral.
"This campus is a protector." She stopped speaking for a moment
as she arranged her letters. "Have you not noticed its shape."
"It is a pentagram."
"Very observant," she was pleased. "But have you noticed it's
position here on the main island."
Nokoru was silent, mentally looking through his maps of Tokyo.
"CLAMP Campus is isolated, across the river from most of the
larger structured in Tokyo."
"Yes. This school is very special and cannot afford to be
invaded."
To Nokoru this was obvious. He had realized earlier this
year that CLAMP Campus was his heart and life, where his friends
were his pleasure and sanity.
Rijichou folded her and placed it in her lap. "And at the
center of the school..."
"The smiling blowfish on the lake."
The long neck bowed as she kept a smile from her lips.
"Yutaka-san realized this, I think." She looked at her letters
and set down "play" off Nokoru's last word. "He is very unique."
Nokoru nodded to this. He had realized that immediately, though he
could not tell why.
"Have you looked at his sketches?" Rijichou asked interestedly.
"No. His attention was distracted while he was looking for
his owl." This was the second time in two days that the statue
at the school's axis had been mentioned with such importance.
"They are interesting." She brought her fan up as Nokoru placed
the last of his letter on the board, "yacht." "I think our games
become more exciting each time..."
*************
Watari was wandering through the park, eyes on the ground when
three petit boys approached him. "Ah, I thought I would help you."
His Kyoto accent strong as he looked back up at the trees.
"Thank you." Nokoru paused as he considered how to broach the
subject. He turned to look at the golden mascot. It had a fun-
loving aspect that did not portray the seriousness that Rijichou
had given it. "Watari-san, may I see your drawing of the statue?"
Watari's face brightened. "Oh, yes!" He loved showing his
pictures. Long legs bent as he picked up his sketchpad. "It's
in here somewhere..."
As the pad fell open stick figures and suns a six year old would
draw were revealed to the detectives. Suoh sweat dropped, suddenly
remembering what had bothered him the other night.
"Watari-san," his soothing voice caused the golden haired man to
pause and look amber eyes into golden. "You said that you lost
your owl "in" one of your drawings."
"Yes," he went back to looking through his pad. "Tyadaaa!!" He
smiled widely.
When the student council leaders looked at the pictured presented
their faces were confused. "It...is nice," Akira spoke first.
"Thank you," the man seemed genuinely pleased at the praise.
The picture was of a mostly round object with large multi-pointed
ears on a square. The circle had uneven eyes and a round mouth.
Around it were the words "Important Statue" and a smiling sun
with rays drawn and a cartoon bubble, reading "Good afternoon!"
in poorly made kanji.
Nokoru recovered quickly, "Should we be looking, then, for one of
your drawings?"
"Yes, I think 003 is in it." Golden locks escaped his already
loose braid on his shoulder as he looked down at the ground
absorbedly.
Suoh shrugged and headed towards the bushes, in the same
direction the breeze had been blowing the last few days, as
Akira approached the water with trepidation. The image would
be lost if it had been wet too long. Nokoru walked next to
Watari, consoling him as they searched.
"Kaichou," Suoh came running with a dirty piece of paper.
"Ah!! You found it!" Watari's slight fingers took the paper
from Suoh's stronger hand. "Oh..." The man was distractedly
attempting to rub dirt off the image.
As the three boys gathered around, Watari turned the sheet
to let them see his masterpiece. On it a round form with a
beak and skinny three toed stick legs. Behind that form was
what they could only assume was another depiction of the
school mascot.
With a flourish Watari produced a pen and made large, lopsided
hearts around the bird picture. "There!" He put the pen into a
pocket of his black jeans and put his fingers to the paper.
The three boys watched with amazement as the slender fingers
pushed through the paper without coming out the back. Nokoru
stepped closer for a look and Suoh moved in front of him.
Akira raised his hand to his mouth.
When Watari's hand came back it was holding a dazed little
owl. "003! OH, thank goodness!" Watari hugged the poor
creature as it looked pleadingly at the detectives.
"Suoh, how did you know?" Nokoru asked quietly.
"I didn't. I thought he had lost his favorite drawing."
"Well, thank goodness the owl is back!" Akira moved a hand
behind his head as he tried to figure the situation out.
Nokoru produced a fan and opened it across under his eyes.
"It is our pleasure to help those in need."
"Thank you again, so much!! I'll return to my experiments
immediately," Watari waved enthusiastically as he gathered
his belongings, 003 on his shoulder.
The tan boy looked at his chief, "I did not realize that we
were in the business of helping men as well."
"I think that we will need to expand our detective work to
include all people." His eyes glinted as he looked at the
sculpture across the water.
"Besides, I am certain somewhere in our original charter
women-to-be are on the list of people we aid," Akira added.
Suoh sweat dropped and turned to Nokoru, who's eyes had
gone wide and mouth was open. "I suppose we should be used
to it."
"Yes..." Nokoru looked at the clock tower to the north.
Suoh turned to follow his friend's gaze, "So much time has
passed and we have work to do."
Nokoru literally marched in the direction opposite the
elementary school until he heard Suoh catching up behind
him. Then he ran.
Akira smiled happily as he remembered what Suoh had told him
about the talented Imonoyama's sports shortcomings, "Kaichou
is athletic in some circumstances that don't have to do with
saving women!"
