Autumn’s Beginnings
By Aris Akoya
She sighed, resting under a tree, glancing upwards she giggled as the leafs had started to fall. Lightly they had graced down on her presence, her giggles turned into laughter as the leaves tickled her nose, she crinkled her face in amusement as she watched them drift by her slowly. Autumn is such a beautiful season, she thought, but no more then wonderful then spring, and summer, and winter. They were all her favorites. She laid her head down on the pile of leaves that scattered around her, landing aimlessly beside her. Outstretching her arms she let out a long sigh, and smiled as she closed her eyes and rest.
She’s so beautiful, he reminded himself. Looking at her made him
blush, just the sight of her made him faint, making his knees wobble, then
falling at her presence. He hid behind the bushes, watching her from the
corner of his eye at first, while sketching out an image of her. It was
entrancing, captivating, no one could be more lovelier then her, only her.
He wrinkled his nose, feeling a sneeze coming on. Holding it fast,
he held his finger to his nose only stopping it from going. Oh no, too
late, he panicked.
“Achooo….!!!”
Birds flew by, startled by the noise. Then…silence came afterward.
He gasped, knowing after he had done that, he was dead, a goner, fallen at his greatest glory. Kami, now I’ll never finish this picture! He angrily scolded himself for not having the strength to restraint himself, and after all that training he went through to be a card captor, he couldn’t even hold a measly sneeze!
Turning his head, he wondered if she woken up by the noise. He watched,
seeing no movement from her body, just the rising breathing from her chest,
her hair disarray…but beautiful still. Oh Kami, he breathed. Watching her
sleep so peacefully, his knuckles whitened as he watched from a distance.
Not being able to touch her, feel her, not even so close.
Too bad though, the voice chided him, you have to act like a arrogant
stubborn bastard to hide your true feelings from her, your pathetic. The
voice mentally laughed, echoed in his ears.
“Shut up, shut up, shut up! God, if I’d ever had a chance, if she had the same feelings for me…I should…I would..." he paused himself there, thinking for awhile he finally hit his finally thought. Slamming his fist against the bark of the tree, blood had trickled. His eyes widened, staring at his hand, a tear had hotly gashed down.
"I am a coward!” he cried, drooping back with no effort to clam down whatsoever .
Just then, it began to rain. The acid tears had crashed down, the thunder had boomed and clanged. Her eyes opened-wide, finally realizing that she’d been asleep all this time.
“Hoeee…! Have I been sleeping? Oni-chan is going to kill me!”
Quickly she gotten up, only hearing a sharp cry. Sobbing heard from a distance. Just behind those bushes, she pointed out, wondering who was crying in the rain?
He heard a shuffle of feet from behind the bushes. Oh no! She’s heard me, great…
She rummaged through the leafy greens, finding a soaked auburn-hair boy before her.
Syaoran…? What is he doing here?
She studied him, head to toe. A boy, no, a young man had sat before her. His muscles had sharpened into a taunt form, the droplets of water streaking his face and dripping from the tips of his nose. Those eyes, his eyes, no longer a blazing amber had glowed in them, but instead…a dying fire struggling to live from the cursed rain’s floods.
He knew he was being watched by her, which made his body into stiff mode at the moment she stepped in. From the corner of his eye he glanced at her as well. The girl, no, a young woman now had stood before him. Making notes he glanced time to time, seeing that her body had fully evolved. No longer a sweet, fresh girl…but now…just looking at her made him even more nervous than before. He flushed under her intent gaze, but dropped his head hopping he wouldn’t see the high blush on his face.
But she did see it, but mistaken his blush by being embarrassed as he been caught by her in the middle of the rain. She shook her head mentally to herself, as she saw the nervous glances he’d been sending her. Her body paused for a moment, then walking to him steadily, not wanting to surprise him, she knelt by him and laid a reassuring hand on his shoulder.
“Syaoran-kun…” she softly whispered, hoping to get his full undivided attention.
He slowly creaked his head to turn to he, finding a warm smile on her face made his tense body ease, knowing that she wouldn’t hurt him. Sighing, he let the pencil drop from his hand, clumsily (but with effort) to hide his sketch from her. His hands fumbled over the paper, it fell, and crumpled on the ground in front of her. Cursing his bad karma, he groaned mentally to himself.
Realization struck her as she found a crumpled sketch before her, she gasped, lightly picking up the drawing. Unfolding it carefully, she held it in her hand as if it was a delicate blossom in bloom. Her hand traced the curved lines that were neatly placed and put together as if it were a puzzle.
Odd, she thought, it looks like....me. Her brow had creased slightly, trying to picture the perfect sketch before it was ruined by the rain’s water.
He averted his gaze towards her as he noticed the sudden irritation in her eyes. He gulped, knowing that she was going to scold him for having such a perverse mind. Oh, no, here it comes, he lain his head toward the ground and prayed to Kami that his punishment would be light.
“Oh Syaoran-kun….it’s--“
Before she was able to finish, he cut in hastily,
“I’msorrySakurathatIdrewapictureofyoubut-“
“Syoaran, daijobu…demo,” she gave her best smiled outwardly. “It’s beautiful.”
“Honto…?” he choked out in surprise, he never thought that would come out. His eyes widened in astonishment. She thought it was…beautiful? Better yet, she wasn’t angry at him at all!
“Hai, it’s lovely. It’s me, right?” she cocked her head to the side in a childish manner, seeing the brightening crimson blush on his cheeks in confirmation that she was right , she let out an amused giggle.
“Yesssss….” He nodded nervously, he didn’t know what to say, what if she changed her mind later on, what if she-
“Arigato, Syaoran,” she said, smiling warmly once again.
He gaped at her for a moment, wide and open. Knowing that she was all right with the picture, he wouldn’t get in trouble, and to top it all off, he enjoyed the closeness he was feeling just sitting right next to her. His cheeks wouldn’t stop burning from the embarrassment he had just survived. Yet, the way she stared at him made him wonder if she really did like like him like he felt for her.
Baka, don’t kid yourself. You would know, too bad it wouldn’t be now, he thought grimly, but still keeping his cool on so not to worry her.
Her voice interrupted his thoughts, as he found her blushing and talking nervously back. “I really must be going now…Otou-san must be worried by now, Nii-chan will start looking for me as well.”
He nodded at her, knowing that she had to go. Reluctantly he let her go, she gave another ‘thank you’ and waved good-bye, going home. Sighing, he heaved up his backpack, collecting his pads and pencils he padded off as well.
Well, you blew your chance kid, to tell her how you really felt about her, end of story, the voice reminded him. He ignored it, still making his way back to his apartment, he grinned to himself.
“No, it’s only the beginning,” he whispered
to himself.
The wind had whisked silently around him, the autumn leaf’s fell from
the trees carefully, but he hadn’t noticed. Only picturing her, and her
smile.
