CLAMP BACKGROUND: In "Tokyo Babylon", Subaru Sumeragi is the head of the mystically powerful Sumeragi Clan, and is an Onmyoujitsu (a sorcerer/exorcist). He is also the last of his family line, since his mother and father had both died when he was younger, and his twin sister, Hokuto Sumeragi, had been murderered by his one-time friend and love-interest, Seishirou Sakurazuka (the Sakurazukamori). Betrayed, guilt-laiden and feeling used, Subaru has channelled all of his endless kindness and compassion into anger and hatred for Seishirou - which has made him strangely disinterested in the rest of the world.=20 In "X", he is one of the seven Dragons of Heaven, and his enemy, Seishirou is a Dragon of Earth. He fights not because he has any real want to save humanity, but because it gives hima chance to get even with Seishirou. Hell-bent upon revenge, he will do whatever it takes to destroy the monster who took everything from him. Love and hate are a thin line to walk, and Subaru demonstrates this belief constantly. 2. FANFICTION BACKGROUND: Subaru is the head of the Sumeragi Clan, an Onmyoujitsu, and a Seishi of Byakko. His twin, older sister, Hokuto, and he were taught their Clan discipline of sorcery-exorcism from the time of their births practically, but Hokuto was limited to only a few spells which she could execute well, while Subaru easily was able to perform almost any spell imaginable (Hokuto once remarked that it seemed that her little brother had inherited most of the mystical genes in their family, while she had inherited the good looks!). However, Subaru had the extra burden of being better than his sister because he was to serve the Miko of his God, and no one in his family or his community let him forget that duty. Life had not been easy for the Sumeragi twins. Their mother had died during a second childbirth, and the baby had been stillborn Then, their father had died in a freak accident when the twins were ten years old. Their strict, and very secretive grandmother took them under her wing, and cared for them the best she could, continuing to instruct them in the ways of Onmyouji and denying them the opportunity to have friends. The twins relied upon each other to fill that roll, which made their connection even closer than before. When they had been 16, a stranger arrived in their small town. He claimed to be a doctor who cared for animals, and stated that he was looking to set up a practice in the area. His introduced himself as Seishirou, and said that he was 19 years old, that he was unmarried, and had no family. Everyone instantly liked the man's good natured smile, his ease with which he carried himself and his incredibly handsome face. They began bringing him their business, and a week after his arrival, even Subaru and Hokuto had given him theirs when their cat got sick. At their first meeting, the three hit it off remarkably well, and were instant friends. Over the course of that year, Seishirou and Subaru became very close, and the older man even hinted at wanting a romantic relationship with the boy. However, Subaru was always too shy and embarrassed to consider initiating it - after all, what would everyone think?!? Hokuto showed approval, however, and secretly 'encouraged' a romantic liaison to 'accidentally happen' between them one day. This meeting ended up with Seishirou and Subaru sharing a little more than a passionate kiss that night. Afterwards, the two never spoke of what happened between them, but there were frequent repeats of the event over the next few months. On the one year anniversary of Seishirou's arrival in town, Subaru's happiness ended.=20 Subaru's twin had found out Seishirou's true nature (as the Sakurazukamori and a Genbu Seishi) accidentally, and confronrted him about it. He admitted to everything, and even went as far as to tell her about the little "bet" that he had made with Subaru. Not wanting her beloved brother to die (he still had to do his duty as a Byakko Seishi), Hokuto cast the only powerful spell that she could - to trade =46ates with any one person. She chose her brother, whom had been fated to die by Seishirou's hand. So it was that Hokuto was murderered in her brother's stead by the Sakurazukamori - and Subaru witnessed it all. Noticing the boy, standing in the doorway, Seishirou turned on him without mercy, breaking his arm and roughing him up badly. Because their game had been quite entertaining thus far, Seishirou decided at that moment to let Subaru live...for a price. Seishirou paralyzed Subaru with a spell and took the boy's body against his will - but with gentle, almost loving skill that confused and hurt Subaru's tortured heart and mind further. During his 'lovemaking', Seishirou painfully spell-marked Subaru's hands with his symbol - a five-pointed star, and proclaimed the boy forever his, even unto death. When he was finished, Seishirou dressed, told Subaru that someday they would meet again to finish their game, and disappeared in a flurry of cherry blossoms.
