FANFICTION BACKGROUND: Touya is the new Seiketsu, or Holyman, of the Serpent Clan from Sairou Country. He is a quiet, fiercely loyal, reserved man, who takes his duty to his clan very seriously. Since he is new to the position, he is still unfamiliar with all of the spells and rituals of the Seiketsu, but he was trained by the former holder of the title, and is considered very accomplished by him. Touya's life has been full of angst and sorrow. His mother, Nadeshiko, died from sickness when he was only eleven years old, but his memories of her helped to get him through his terrible sadness. It is because of her that he pursued the path of holyman.=20 His father, Fujitaka, the current advisor to the Serpent Chieftain, took his wife's passing hard, and has never remarried. He and Touya have never seen eye-to-eye on much, and as a consequence, they are not close. He has one younger sister, Moya-ii, who he dotes on. Moya-ii also happens to be the Byakko Seishi, Sakura, Mistress of the Sacred Clow. He is very over-protective of her, and believes utterly in her ability to accomplish anything that she sets her mind to, despite how young and inexperienced she is. He knows that she will make a fine Shichiseishi, and is proud of her. Of course, this doesn't stop him from teasing her about the crush she has on Touya's best friend, Yukito of the Wren Clan! In addition, there is a girl that Touya loves very much, but whom he can never 'be involved with', since Seiketsu must remain celibate for their entire lives. Heartbroken that he can never show his feelings to this girl, his love remains at a distance, unrequited... or so he believes. One day, the Serpent Clan elder had a vision, in which he saw four new Mikos seeking the Shinzahos of the former Byakko and Genbu Mikos all across the four countries. While each girl searched on their own, a terrible black cloud appeared behind them, swallowing the earth where they walked, until finally all was entirely engulfed in darkness. When each girl turned back to look where they had tred, the evil swallowed her as well. When all four girls were gone, every living thing ceased to exist. As a result of this vision, the elder asked that three people from the clans volunteer to go out and find each of the unknown Mikos and bring them together at the villiage. Touya volunteered to be the one to go find the Suzaku Miko and bring her back, while Yukito volunteered to find the Seiryuu Miko. In addition, one other person volunteered to seek out the remaining unknown Miko - that for Genbu. Before the three set off, all of the people of the clan gathered together and prayed for their safe return. A relative of each of the four gave a farewell gift, as a symbol of their well wishes; Touya's sister had made him a cloak, and Yukito a warding charm against evil. The clan's prayers were directed towards the gifts, and as a result, each one obtained some sort of holy protection (the cloak was made impervious to weather conditions, guaranteeing that the wearer would remain constantly comfortable and safe from the harsh, outer elements). When all was finished, Touya said his goodbyes to his family, his Clan, and Yukito, and left, heading for Hokkan Country, where it was rumored that the Suzaku Maiden had gone. In the Forest of Midgar in Hokkan, he happened across a young girl being attacked. Using his skill with the bow, he wounded the attacker, and saved the girl. He then ran after the escaped criminal, with the intent of bringing him to justice. However, the man evaded Touya's tracking (a feat in itself, since Clansmen are among the world's best trackers and foragers). Tired from the long chase, Touya went onto the next city, intending on finding rest, confident that the man would not bother the girl again. Later, while in town, he spied the girl he had saved following him, and confronted her. He accidentally learned that she was the one girl he had been seeking for all those weeks - the Suzaku Maiden, Miaka Yuuki. However, before he could tell her everything, the two were attacked by the Genbu Seishi, Seishirou Sakurazuka (the Sakurazukamori). Giving Miaka his cloak and sending her away for help, Touya battled the new threat. However, not being a Shichieishi, his powers were no match for Seishirou's, and he was slain. Ferio, Tasuki and Chichiri buried him under an old oak tree on the outskirts of the city, saying a last prayer for the fallen defender.
