This is the Gingetsu/Ran fic (well, sort of) that I've promised Kristin a
long time ago. It's rather short, and there's no tea. But I hope it's
enough to repay the squickiness until my next G/K fic. *grin*

Hair
A "Clover" Fanfic
Presented by Alison Koh
I gazed at my reflection in the mirror. Pale blue eyes stared back at me.
My long hair, pulled back loosely in a tail and held together by a white
ribbon, was thrown carelessly over my right shoulder. Except that in the
mirror, it seemed to be my left. It might have been my twin watching me,
but my twin would look ten years younger.
I held up the scissors, measuring it about the nape of my neck, and cut off
the tail.

/You're changed./
Yes.
/He's changed you. I can feel it./
No.
/You're so distant. I can't hear your heart anymore./
It has nothing to do with him.
/Yes, it does. He's taken you away from me. I'm going to kill him!/
You're wrong, A. You won't be killing anyone, because I won't allow it.
/Do you think you can stop me, C? I've always been stronger than you./
Not anymore.
/What do you mean?/
I've changed because I've grown, and have become stronger now. I'm no
longer the same person who parted from you a year ago.
/Liar! We're twins, no, we're more than twins! We were cloned from the
same source!/
Our genes are the same, but our temperaments have always been different. We
are different persons, you and I. We may have looked the same once, but
we've always been distinct.
/We're the same!/
That was what you've always wished for, that we'd be the same. You killed B
because I had been closer to him, and you didn't want to be alone. But B
and I had always understood that we were three individuals. Only you failed
to realise that. If you had actually tried harder to See me now instead of
hiding your special sight, you'll know that my appearance has already
changed.
/No! I won't allow it! It's that man. I'm going to kill him!/
The Council will never let you leave your cage, you know that. Just as I,
too, am in my cage. But this is where I've decided to stay till I die.
/Damn you! But wait.../
Why are you laughing?
/That man. He will die soon after you too. Why so silent, my brother? Did
he not tell you about the device in his brain? How else do you suppose the
Council would allow a Three-Leaf to stay with a Two-Leaf?/
The Council will remove the device after my death.
/You are still as naïve as ever. I've read their thoughts. They will never
allow him to live. He knows too much. Even now, the Council questions the
wisdom of their decision./
I'm sorry, A, but I think we should stop communicating with each other from
now on.
/Wait, C! Don't go, please.../
Farewell, brother. Terminating connection...now.

My body was numb as I watched my hair scatter lightly onto the ground, still
holding the scissors in my hand.
The door to the bathroom opened easily for I had not locked it. Gingetsu
stood at the doorway, observing me silently.
"You're back," I said automatically.
He didn't speak. Instead, he moved forward, and with one swift motion,
displaced the pair of scissors from my hand.
"What?" I was about to protest.
"Keep still," he ordered in a low gentle voice. I obeyed. A few seconds
later, I heard the snipping sounds of twin blades slicing onto hair buzzing
all around my head. When the sound finally stopped, Gingetsu said, "It's
done."
I gazed into the mirror again. Instead of the sad uneven clump I had
created earlier, my hair now fell neatly in short wispy bangs around my
face. I looked so different, and so liberated.
With a huge smile, I wrapped my arms around his broad shoulders, and
whispered, "Thank you."
I could sense him smiling in his heart, though I knew that his face would
betray no emotion. I tightened my embrace, and said, "I spoke with A today.
It's to be our last communication. He told me about the device."
"I see." A typical reply from him, which revealed nothing as usual.
"He also told me that the Council intends to activate it even after your
assignment is over." We both understood which "assignment" I was referring
to. It was not necessary to explain.
"I know," he replied, all too calmly.
I lifted my head to look at him clearly. Shock must have registered all
over my face. "But why?" I asked.
"Do you not like it here?" he questioned.
"Yes, but..."
I felt a large towel being pushed under my nose.
Gingetsu said, "You'd better take a shower now, or you'll find that the hair
residues are going to get prickly."
I nodded and watched anxiously as he stepped out of the bathroom. But just
before he closed the door behind him, he said, "In response to your
question: that is my wish."
Tears welled up in my eyes. I knew for sure then that I'd never leave this
place. I'll never leave him.
