The Magic Knights of Clover
By Ginga (and Jonna)
It was a very dreary day for Lan. Gingetsu wasn't home; Kazuhiko had some odd
errands to run. The apartment was silent. There was absolutely nothing for him
to do.
*I'm so bored*
Lan thought as he fell backward on a nearby chair. He just lay there until
something caught his eye. It was a game system and a video game. Lan got out of
his seat and walked to the game was.
*Hmm... Wonder what this could be*
He picked up the game and read the title. "Magic Knight Rayearth. Sounds kinda
fun. Gingetsu must have picked it up or something." Lan put the game into the
system and turned it and the TV on. A fanfare of music and lights
blasted out of the speakers making Lan jump. Suddenly bright red letters
appeared on the screen. 'PRESS START'. Lan pressed the start button and the
screen went black. "What's wrong with this thing?" Lan said, his voice
showing annoyance. The screen brightened with colors again as the music started
to play the annoying song from the beginning credits. A picture on the imager
then switched to Kazuhiko's high scores. Then after a 5 second delay it could
automatically shift to a screen that said 'NUMBER OF PLAYERS' *Well, I guess
I'll play by myself since there's nobody here* Lan moves the control to 'ONE'
and pressed the button.
The screen flashed and a young SD Hikaru appeared on the screen. She was
standing in the middle of a forest with two other SD characters. One of the SD
characters was Umi, the other Fuu. "Now what happens?" Lan said as he
played his fingers skillfully across the pad. A couple seconds later ...a box
appeared in the left-hand corner, containing a summary of everything that had
happened in the game so far. "Kazuhiko must've played a lot before he left.
He's already got magic, weapons, and just got out of the Forest of Silence. Now
I have to get the Escudo from the fountain."
Lan played the game for some time; he had gotten everything from getting
Escudo to defeating Caldina, all that was left was defeating Lafarga and
Zagato. Suddenly the door flew open and two figures walked in. ... "LAN!!!"
Lan looked up in surprise as Kazuhiko strode into the room, an indignant look
on his face. "WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING??!"
Lan slowly turned towards the man who suddenly ran in the room with a panic
that would make Lan run out of the room screaming for help. Gingetsu looked at
Kazuhiko and made a confused look. "What's wrong?"
"He's...He's playing my game!"
"Oh, is that all?"
"What do you mean is that all! I wanted to beat it by myself!"
"Well, why don't you start a new game then?"
"A new game! It'll take ages to get where I was! And take even longer to beat
the thing!"
"Calm down, It wouldn't take you THAT long. Anyway, Lan and I will help you,
alright?" said Oruha, walking into the room and putting her arm around
Kazuhiko's.
*Sniff* "Fine."
Lan smiled and said to Kazuhiko, "You know, we can start a new game. But
instead of one player, we'll have three. Is that ok?"
*Sniffle* "I guess so."
"How do you play?" said Oruha as she comforted Kazuhiko.
"The rules of this game are simple," Lan explained, as he handed out two
black control units with red buttons and lights. "The premise is that three
people are summoned from the fictitious city of 'Tokyo' to save the world of
Cephiro by rescuing a princess."
Oruha smiled and clasped her hands together over the controller. "How
wonderful! I think I may have heard of this game before. I always thought it
sounded like a very cute story!" Gingetsu said nothing, but he was frowning
behind his shades as he turned the control unit over in his hands.
"So how come I don't get to play?" Kazuhiko asked, a miffed expression on his
face.
"Well," Lan hesitated, "Only three people can play at a time. It doesn't
really work if you have four...."
Oruha leaned back against Kazuhiko and put a hand to the side of his face.
"Don't worry," she purred, "We can play later."
Kazuhiko's frown immediately transformed into a big silly grin.
"And anyway, I ruined your game so I should make it up for you." said Lan as
he reset the game.
Lan then began to erase the file and started a new one, one that was in a
multi-player mode. A screen then showed up and showed three junior high school
girls. "These girls are the main characters in the game."
Just then Lan chose one of the pictures. Lan pressed a button and zoomed in on
one of the pictures. The closeup of a girl in a green school uniform, with
blond hair and glasses, appeared on the imager. Lan read the character
background aloud. "Hououji Fuu. Fourteen years old and in the eighth grade.
Blood type A. Sagittarius."
"I like her," Oruha said. "She seems like the serious type."
"Good," Lan said with a cheerful smile. "That's the controller you're holding,
so I'm glad you approve."
A new girl in a blue uniform and sky-blue hair appeared on the imager.
"Riuzaki Umi. Fourteen years old and in the eighth grade. Blood type A. Pisces.
Lan looked away from the 3D text with a positively evil glint in his eye.
"Gingetsu, she's all yours."
Oruha's eyes got wide. "Oh dear," she murmured. "Lan, you are too cruel."
"What?" Gingetsu said suspiciously.
"Nothing, nevermind!" Lan said quickly, over Oruha's "You'll find out soon
enough...." A third girl appeared, wearing a red blazer and hair braided back
into a long red plait. "Shidou Hikaru. Fourteen years old and in the
eighth grade. Blood type O. Leo. She's the one I'll play."
"She looks too young to be in the eighth grade," Kazuhiko observed.
Lan raised his eyebrows. "Well, it can be deceiving, trying to guess someone's
age from their looks, you know. ...And height isn't everything."
"You two be quiet," Oruha scolded. "You're missing the beginning of the game!"
(The imager flashes many colors and after the fanfare of music and pictures
are finished the game finally begins.)
"Finally, how long was that opening supposed to go on for?" asked Gingetsu.
"And what is my character DOING?"
Lan looked at the screen and said, "Hmm... I think you pushed one of the 'get
mad at...' buttons. Umm, and I think she getting mad at Clef."
"CLEF?" yelled a distressed Gingetsu.
"I think Clef is that person with lavender hair." said Oruha who was pressing
buttons trying to keep Gingetsu's character calmed down.
"And why did I agree to play this?" he said with an edgy tone.
"You never really did. You just took the controller." said Lan with an evil
smile.
(A little while goes by and the group finally defeats a monster.)
"Yeah, all RIGHT!" Lan crowed, surveying the holographic carnage. "Hikaru
ROCKS!!!"
"Wow, Lan," Oruha commented, "You're really good at this game."
Gingetsu frowned at that, and said sourly, "You know, it's kinda unfair when
he's has magic, while the rest of us don't. And what do you think he *does* at
home every day? After all, he owns every video game ever made...." Lan looked
embarassed, but was forestalled from replying as Gingetsu focused on the imager
again. "What..." he said in a strangled voice, "Is that girl doing now?"
Lan smiled, his embarrassment vanishing into smugness. "You have to be
careful. Press the wrong button, and Umi gets that way." He gestured at the SD
figure who's angry face was now occupying two-thirds of the imager. "It looks
like she's mad at Mokona. Don't worry, it'll pass soon."
(After Clef tells the girls to go get weapons, the group leaves for Presea's
place.)
"Now, where are we going?" groaned Gingetsu. He was NOT enjoying this game one
bit. His character kept running around like a maniac! What kind of game
character does THAT? He was definitely going to get him for this... "Not
again!!"
'I'm definitely going to get Lan for this...'
Oruha giggled and put a hand on Gingetsu's shoulder. "I told you Lan was being
cruel. Anyway, Umi stopped yelling and we arrived at Presea's house. This is
where we are supposed to get our weapons."
"Weapons? How LONG is this game?"
"Oh, it depends on how fast you play. I'd say we're about one-third of the way
done." Lan said with another evil look.
Gingetsu shook his head in grief and exhaustion. "I'm NEVER playing this game
again!"
"Hey, Oruha! Can I play this part?" asked Kazuhiko.
She gave him a suspicious look. "Why? What's so important about this part? All
they do is get their weapons."
"True, but uh... I just like this part that's all. And, by the way, this IS my
game."
"Fine, but only for this part. I was having fun." she added a pout to make
Kazuhiko understand she was serious.
"Argh!!! My characters acting up again!! How many times does she do THIS?"
Gingetsu looked so stressed, that he was almost pulling his hair out.
"Well, she's supposed to do it now. I mean, she is trapped in a cage and
everything." Kazuhiko pointed out to him. He turned to Oruha and said, "Isn't
that right?"
"Technically, yes. And then Presea will come out and act pretty much the same
way." Right after she said that, Presea came onto the screen and joined Umi in
going on a rampage.
"Right, just what I need, two crazy people. You know, this game can drive
people insane." said Gingetsu.
Lan laughed as he pushed a few buttons. Soon the Pharle calmed down and so did
Umi. The group got their weapons and traveled off to the Forest.
*Sounding like a 5 year old* "Are we done yet? This game is really getting on
my nerves." Gingetsu turned to see Kazuhiko trying to keep the controller away
from Oruha.
"I told you for that part only. And your turn is finished." Oruha said as she
reached for the controller.
"Not fair!! I wanna play!!!" Kazuhiko finally gave up and threw the control
pad to his girlfriend.
"Wait a minute, who's that guy?"
"That's Ferio," Oruha said, re-claiming her controller again. "Isn't he cute?"
Kazuhiko looked annoyed. "No. What is he doing, anyway? He can't do that, can
he? Giving away stuff like that. It's just not right!"
Oruha sidled up to him and walked her fingers up his arm to the short hair at
the base of his neck. "Why, Kazuhiko. I believe you're jealous, because he's
the romantic type."
"Jealous? Of a guy with green hair? Be serious, Oruha."
Their conversation was interrupted by a series of very unusual sounds of
frustration coming from Gingestu's direction. "She's doing it AGAIN," he said
stiffly, to no one in particular.
Lan leaned over to look at his control unit. "You must have accidentally
pushed the 'mad at Mokona' button on the control unit. Really, you shouldn't do
that so often, Gingetsu."
"No," Oruha put in, "I think that was the other button. This time he
accidentally pushed the 'mad at Ferio' button."
Kazuhiko studied the imager over Oruha's shoulder. "No, Lan's right. That was
definitely the 'mad at Mokona' button. Hmm... There must be more than one of
those."
"I don't care which button it was," Gingetsu said, shaking his head. He added
in a pleading voice, "Can't somebody stop her?"
Lan smirked. "It seems to be a game rule. I'm afraid no one can stop her."
Gingetsu buried his face in his hands. "Arg. I give up." He set the controller
down and, with as much dignity as he could muster, rose to his feet. "I think I
hear the General calling me."
"Hey!" Lan protested. "We haven't even gotten to level 4 yet! And you know, I
think I have the sequel video game around here someplace!" His words only
caused Gingetsu to beat a hasty retreat from the room.
"I guess we'd better be going too. Lan, will you please save the game for us?
And thank you for allowing us to play." Oruha smiled and gave Lan a small kiss
on his cheek. Kazuhiko grew red with anger and pulled Oruha
closer to him.
"Yeah, thanks Lan. We'll see you later. Oh, and DON'T PLAY MY FILE!"
After Kazuhiko and Oruha left, Lan turned the game on again and instead of the
opening theme starting, a young girl with white hair appeared on the imager.
Lan smiled and said, "So Suu, ready to play?"
The young girl smiled and said, "Of course! Let's start where we left off
before."
Lan smiled and started the game with Suu.
********
Gingetsu's head was hidden under his pillow. Muffled words could be heard
from underneath it. "That game is evil, I tell you...EVIL!!!!"
The End... or is it?
