Chapter 2
Misato continued her explanation. "Only those summoned from another world are able to revive the Evangelion. But none of you seem to be wearing proper attire to enter the field of battle." Misato looked over the three teenagers. "Do you know any magic?"
The three teens all shook their heads.
Misato sighed. "How can you not?"
Asuka growled. "Because we don't need magic back where we came from!"
Misato sighed. "Fine, fine, fine. I will give you magic too. I was just thinking of armor, but...." She took the cross-shaped pendant off her neck, thrust it at the sky, and chanted, "ACCEPT!" Suddenly, the teenagers were swept in whirlwinds -- a white wind surrounding Rei, a blue wind surrounding Shinji, and a red wind surrounding Asuka.
"There," Misato smiled.
"What is this!?" Asuka looked down and screamed. She was wearing a red skin-tight bodysuit that covered her whole body from the neck down. She looked over at the other two. Rei was in a white suit, and Shinji was in a blue suit. "What have you done?"
"It's a plugsuit... the best armor in Cephiro. It will change shape according to your needs. When you are in need of something, press the button on the right arm, and the suit will change to whatever you need it to be."
"What is this that is in my hair, Guru Katsuragi?" Rei asked.
"That is an interface headset. It lets people from another world use magic."
"Magic? Really?" Asuka smiled.
"But you should use it sparingly. If you cast to no particular target, it will come shooting back at you."
"Oh...."
Rei looked at Misato. "Then teach us how to use it."
Misato smiled. "That is what I was about to do. Who should I start with...." She pointed at Shinji. "You have been awfully quiet through all of this... so I will start with you. Close your eyes."
Shinji followed Misato's instructions. He felt something deep inside his heart.
"Can you feel it? The words inside your Heart...."
"I feel it, yes."
"Look at it closely.... it is your spell."
At that moment, an enormous bang filled the air, shaking the earth. Misato looked up and squinted at the direction of the bang.
"An Angel...!? Shit, did Kaworu realize that the Children have been summoned!?"
"Kaworu? Wasn't that the bad guy?" Asuka asked.
"Yes."
"Quick! I want to learn magic too!"
"It is too late. By the time that I can provide you with magic, the Angel will be here."
"Oh my..." Rei sighed.
"CLEFTO!" Misato chanted, and in front of the teens appeared a device that resembled a hum-vee. "Here, get on this and drive west!"
Rei and Asuka climbed into the hum-vee.
"Misato-san! What are you going to do?" Shinji suddenly spoke up.
"I will fight that Angel."
"But....!"
"Just go!" Misato shouted. Shinji climbed in, and the hum-vee started to move, as if it knew where it was going.
"The hum-vee will take you to Ritsuko........... get weapons..... PenPen....!!" Misato's voice became harder to hear as the hum-vee gained speed. Soon, she was out of sight from the teenagers.
Misato looked at the figure that landed in front of her, and blinked in disbelief. It was a middle-aged female human... a female human that Misato recognized as one of her old friends from her college days.
"Alcione... Why are you, one of the best magical engineers in Cephiro...?"
"Long time no see, Misato." The lady smiled. "You seem to have a confused look, as if you wanted to ask me why I am here."
"That's exactly what I'm wondering. Why are you, one of the contributors of magic for the Instrumentality of Man Project, fighting against the project?"
"I do have my reasons."
"The professors at college did not refine your magic skills to uphold the peace in Cephiro, not disturb it!! Why, Alcione?"
"You have always been reasonable, Misato. It was nice to see you again, but I am in a hurry." Alcione thrust a staff into the air. "CLEFTO!" A giant mechanistic creature with arms that resembled glowing whips appeared.
"Alcione...!"
"I know I can't win against you with just my magic, Misato. I am not stupid enough to fight you, the most powerful magical engineer in my graduating class. So I ask you to babysit Shamsiel here..." Alcione revved the engine of the hovercraft. "...while I go finish off the Children." With those words, the scantily-clad female zoomed away from Misato.
"Children...!" Misato thought as she stared towards the direction that the two crafts sped away. "If you cannot win against Alcione, you will not be able to revive the Instrumentality of Man Project and return to your world.... For the true enemy that you must face is far stronger than Alcione ever will be...."
".... Do you think Misato-san will be all right?" Shinji asked with a doubtful look.
"Are you an idiot!?" Asuka snapped back. "Of course she's going to be all right! She seems to know what she's doing!"
"She was telling us before you came, Ikari-kun, that she graduated from college as the best magical engineer in her graduating class," Rei quietly commented.
The Children heard a roar behind them.
"What was that sound?" Shinji asked worriedly as he looked back.
"Will you quit worrying!? That was probably Misato finishing off the Angel!"
"Then, Asuka, explain that hovercraft that's gaining on us."
"What did you just say!?"
A voice thundered from behind the hum-vee. "ARAILU!" Before Asuka could focus on the hovercraft, shards of ice started to rain on the hum-vee.
"We seem to be in a bad situation here," Rei mused.
"I can see that without your comment, goody-goody!" Asuka growled.
"This means that Misato-san might be in trouble!" Shinji's face paled. "We should go back!"
"And how are we doing to do that? The old lady on the hovercraft is gaining on us," Asuka yelled back.
"But I have to do something to save Misato-san!"
"..... If you want to save Guru Katsuragi, we have to press on." Rei looked at Shinji.
Asuka sighed. "I have to agree with this goody-goody here. Misato trusted us. She wanted us to reach Ritsuko, whoever that is, and go on with our "quest". If we turn back to help Misato, we will be doing something against her will. She doesn't want us to help her defeat the Angels; she wants us to revive the Evangelion and save Cephiro."
"..... Then we have to do something about that old lady," Rei said as she looked back.
"Okay." Shinji nodded in agreement as the hovercraft approached the vehicle.
"My my, such young children!" Alcione snickered. "But they must die. They must die for Kaworu-sama to return my beloved Zagato-sama to me."
The teenagers blinked.
"It is nice to meet you, but it is time for farewell." Alcione smiled evilly as she charged up for the final blow.
"I can't run. I can't run. I have to face the enemy. I can't run. I can't run..." Shinji thought as he debated what to do. Finally, he turned back and faced the hovercraft. "Words. In my Heart. My Magic."
"BakaShinji! What are you doing!?"
Shinji closed his eyes and lifted his arms and pointed them at the hovercraft.
"And what do you think you are doing, my boy?" Alcione snickered.
Shinji opened his eyes. "STEAM DRAGON!"
A whirl of steam formed in front of his outstretched arms, spinning quickly towards the hovercraft. Right in front of the hovercraft, the whirl of steam started forming a shape of a dragon's face. The face opened up its mouth and swallowed the hovercraft and its operator, engulfing the middle-aged magical engineer in a cloud of superheated steam. Her charged energy of cold ice instantly evaporated, and her body started feeling the heat of condensation as the steam started to condense on her body. The immense heat started to vaporize her skin, her hair.... As the dragon disappeared, all that was left was a heap of molten metal which flowed down to the ground, leaving a glistening trail of silver.
Asuka looked at the trail of molten metal. "WOW!"
Rei blinked. "I guess that was the Magic that Guru Katsuragi was talking about."
"WOW!" Asuka looked at Shinji. "That was incredible! Did you see what your Magic did?"
"My.. . Magic. . ." Shinji sighed.
"Yes, your Magic." Rei smiled. "It saved us. I guess this is the time to say thank-you. Thank You."
"No problem." Shinji smiled back, and felt himself drift into unconsciousness.
