Chapter 10: Memories
300 years later.
The cold icy wind swept across the village of Yasha. The villagers
hurried around, chatting and doing their chores. The children played
nearby. Yasha-ou sat on a bench, staring out to the blue-purple mountains.
"...Yasha-ou...", said the elder.
Yasha-ou turned around.
"Elder.", he said.
"Young lord, are you still staring out to the vast icy regions?",
the elder asked.
Yasha-ou nodded. It had been 300 years ago that Susan entered the
ice castle, only to never leave. It had been 300 years since Taishakuten
stormed Heaven and slew the emperor, he himself had become the new emperor.
Yasha-ou sighed.
"Young lord, such a sad look in your face.", said the elder.
Yasha-ou didn't say anything.
Aizenmuyo laughed.
"Hm... I want to play around a bit today...", she said to herself.
"What is it you wish?", asked Susan.
"Heh, Susan, breach the kekkai to the north, bring some of the
Mazoku with you. Why don't you... play around for a bit?", she commanded.
"Yes, Aizenmuyo.", said Susan as she vanished into thin air, her
movements too quick for the eye.
A boy came running to Yasha-ou, out of breath.
"Yasha-ou! The kekkai to the north! Something's breached it!", he
yelled.
Yasha-ou stood up and ran outside to his horse.
"Hm, I can hear them, they're coming, Hiyana.", said Susan.
"This'll be quick.", said Hiyana, narrowing her eyes.
Susan snickered and they both waited.
Yasha-ou arrived at the scene where his soldiers were trying to fend
the Mazoku off.
"Stand your ground!", he yelled.
Suddenly he saw a shimmer in the woods. When the Mazoku were driven
back, Yasha-ou and his men put up the kekkai again. But a strange wind
caught his attention. Yasha-ou looked up, sensing something. He saw two
figures, their entire bodies covered in a single colored cloth. One wore
black, the other wore white. He had never seen these two before, they
looked human. The in black vanished into thin air and appeared at the edge
of the kekkai. Yasha-ou took out Yamato.
Surprisingly, the figure stepped right into the kekkai, without
breaching it. He was shocked. Yasha-ou unsheathed Yamato, its blade
shimmering like the moonlight. The sheath vanished like fireflies. The
black figure disappeared and appeared right in front of Yasha-ou. He could
see it's eyes, they were a dark brown color, just like a human's. They
weren't purple! The eyes narrowed and it took a step forward. Yasha-ou
built up his ki, ready.
Then the black figure leaped away, landing some distance away.
Yasha-ou took this opportunity to try and hit it. He raised Yamato to the sky.
"Yama Tenrouken!", he said as he flung the sword down.
A giant ki blast flew past the black figure. The figure had moved,
and it was unhurt. It looked at Yasha-ou again, but then a small black
piece of cloth fell to the ground. A wind blew then, and the entire mask
fell away. Revealing the mysterious face...
"...Susan...", Yasha-ou whispered.
"Kill him, Susan.", Aizenmuyo ordered.
She was watching from her crystal, amazed that the man had that much
skill.
"Susan!", Yasha-ou called.
Susan was shocked that the man knew her name. But she had orders to
follow. Susan vanished and appeared right in front of Yasha-ou. A dagger
dropped into her hand from the long sleeve of her shirt. She slashed it at
the man.
Yasha-ou jumped away, just in time. A second later, and she
would've cut his stomach open! He looked in confusion at Susan.
"Susan, why are you attacking me?!", he asked.
She vanished again and appeared again. Susan knocked Yasha-ou to
the ground, she stood over him triumphantly, raising her dagger into the
air. 'Strike him' Aizenmuyo's voice told her. But something held her back.
Yasha-ou stared at Susan, waiting for the blow.
'I will only be happy if I'm a killer...' 'I'm a weapon...' the
thoughts ran through Susan's mind. Then she thought, 'I will not kill!'.
Susan hesitated, almost remembering something. The man looked faintly
familiar. She knew him... somewhere in her mind...
"Susan!", Yasha-ou whispered.
Something in that voice snapped something in her memory. Susan took
a step back, hesitating. Suddenly, from out of nowhere, three shurikens
shot out and pierced the ground by Yasha-ou. That snapped Susan's attention.
"Oi! Susan, we'd better jet!", Hiyana called.
Susan turned towards the woods, hesitating. She took one last look
at the strange man and leaped into the forest, as silent and swift as the
killer she could've been. Yasha-ou got up from the ground and almost chased
after her.
"So you're still alive, Susan...", Yasha-ou whispered.
"Susan, you failed. Why didn't you kill him?", Aizenmuyo asked.
"...I'm sorry, Aizenmuyo, forgive me.", Susan apologized.
"...Make sure it never happens again.", she scolded.
"Yes, Aizenmuyo.", said Susan.
"So, got past lecture hour huh?", Hiyana asked.
Susan slumped onto the ground.
"Hey, what's wrong?", Hiyana asked.
"That man... he knew my name.", Susan sighed.
"You mean the one you were about to kill?", Hiyana asked.
Susan nodded.
"Are you feeling okay?", Hiyana asked.
"He knew my name... I know him too, somewhere... I just can't
remember where...", Susan whispered.
"You really _are_ losing it. Just forget about the whole thing, it
wasn't that fun anyway.", said Hiyana, patting Susan on the back.
"Yeah, maybe you're right...", said Susan.
Yasha-ou sat on his bed, pondering.
"Why didn't she recognize me?", he asked himself.
There could be no other logical reasoning. Her mind seemed not
hers, but erased. He suspected the demon of the ice castle responsible.
Still, he had been forbidden to go rescue her...
Zenmijou.
"How could Kuyou, who has been imprisoned for so long, escape?",
Taishakuten asked.
The court was silent.
"Where's Yasha-ou, he's late.", said Taishakuten.
Right then, Yasha-ou strolls in.
"Yasha-ou, you are late. Didn't I tell you when you were supposed
to be here?", Taishakuten asked.
"I'm sorry, sir.", said Yasha-ou.
"...Hm, you were probably busy. Tell me, you are a friend of Kuyou,
are you not?", Taishakuten asked.
"Yes, I am.", Yasha-ou answered.
"She has refused to serve me for 300 years, and now she's escaped.
I want you to go out and kill her.", said Taishakuten.
"You cannot possibly order Yasha-ou to do that! He and Kuyou are
friends!", Karura-ou interrupted.
"Silence. Karura-ou, you are dismissed. Yasha-ou, you are
dismissed.", said Taishakuten.
Karura-ou caught up with Yasha-ou.
"Yasha-ou, are you going to kill Kuyou?", she asked.
"...I don't know...", he said.
Kuyou reached her place of practice.
"This may be the last time...", she whispered.
Kuyou waited, she knew Taishakuten would send Yasha-ou after her.
"...Susan, for 300 years, I have waited... I only hope that you can
save us...", she whispered.
"Kuyou...", came a voice.
Kuyou turned around.
"Yasha-ou... Taishakuten is a fool to send my only friend after
me...", she said.
"Kuyou, why don't you just serve the new emperor?", Yasha-ou asked.
"Yasha-ou, I promised someone I would tell this to you...", she
said, changing the subject.
"What is it?", he asked.
Kuyou told him of the prophecy.
"But, what do you mean?", Yasha-ou asked.
"Yasha-ou, to the north is the forest of Maya. There you will find
an infant, but I warn you, this child is destined to kill you.", said Kuyou.
"This child... intrigues me... I will go free it. Then I will come
back.", said Yasha-ou.
"Oh, Yasha-ou, I loved Ashura-ou so much!", said Kuyou as Yasha-ou left.
"Susan and Hiyana, it's time for you to return to your ice prisons,
I don't want you to be so accustomed to the outside world.", said Aizenmuyo,
a hint of jealousy in her voice.
She raised her hands and two blocks of ice encased the two girls.
"Susan... Susan...", called a gentle voice.
"...Who... are you...?", Susan asked.
A figure of a man appeared. He looked faintly familiar. He had
golden eyes and jet black hair.
"Remember. Try to remember.", he said.
Susan thought, deep within her mind, she could almost remember.
'What's keeping me from remembering?' she asked herself.
"I know you, and you know me.", said the man.
Something clicked in her memory.
"A... shur..a...-ou...", she whispered.
"Yes, that is me.", he said, smiling.
"But, why are you in my dream?", she asked.
"I'm not. I'm a part of your mind, just like your mother. Susan, I
have very important news.", he said.
"W-what is it?", she asked.
"Aizenmuyo plans to use you and Hiyana to conquer Tenkai for
herself. You must not let her do so. I want you to do something for me.",
he said.
"Wait, Ashura-ou... why can't I feel... your ki?", she asked.
"...Susan, I'm dead.", he said.
Shock ran through Susan.
"...no...Ashura-ou... who...?", she stammered.
"It was my destiny. You will know who did it, soon. But, you must
promise me something, Susan.", said Ashura-ou.
"...Whatever it is...I'll try my best to do it, Ashura-ou...", Susan
said, sadness in her voice.
"Promise me... that you won't destroy Tenkai.", he said.
"What... do you mean?", she asked.
"Promise me.", he said.
"...I promise... but, I don't understand what you mean.", she said.
"Take care of Ashura, and Yasha-ou for me.", said Ashura-ou as he
vanished.
"...Yasha-ou... that must be...", Susan whispered.
*************
"That man... he's so strong... I want him...", Aizenmuyo whispered.
She gazed at Yasha-ou from her crystal ball.
"Yasha!", Ashura called.
The butterflies covered Yasha-ou all over. He could move.
'Ashura', he whispered.
Then a bright light appeared and vanished, along with Yasha-ou.
"Yasha... YASHA!!!", Ashura screamed.
Aizenmuyo chuckled.
"You're mine... all mine... You're so strong, you can save me...",
Aizenmuyo whispered.
"...who are you?!", Yasha-ou asked, trapped in an ice prison.
"...My name is Aizenmuyo... you look like the one... no, you can't
be...", she whispered.
'A demon possessed body...' Yasha-ou suspected. He gazed around the
ice castle, unable to move his head.
"You're the one I've been waiting for... so long it's been...", she
said to Yasha-ou.
"You're wrong... I'm not the one...", he said.
Aizenmuyo smiled, chuckling. Then she took over his mind.
"It's that way.", said Kujaku, pointing in the indicated direction.
"Kujaku! You know where it is?!", Ashura asked.
"Yep.", said Kujaku, a funny smile on his face.
Karura-ou glared at him.
"You're not one of the Six Stars, and you not with Taishakuten...
I've been wondering who you really are...", she asked suspiciously.
"Aheheh.... I'm just a mere traveler, here for the ride.", he said,
laughing.
"I travel around around a lot, and I've never heard of it.", said
Ryu-ou.
"Kujaku, I promised Yasha we'd be together!", said Ashura-ou.
Kujaku narrowed his eyes, smiling mysteriously. Then he jumped down
and patted Ashura, grabbing her cheek next.
"You're a good girl.", he said, smiling again.
"That girl I saw the other time with the Mazoku... she's human...",
said Yasha-ou.
"...Hm, yes, she is.", said Aizenmuyo.
Then a butterfly flew to her, it seemed to tell her something.
Aizenmuyo smirked.
"Ashura! Go ahead and go save Yasha!", yelled Karura-ou.
"Shurato will resonate and lead you to Yamato... and his owner!",
yelled Kujaku.
Ashura nodded and ran towards the ice castle. At the door to the
ice castle, just like Kujaku said, Shurato resonated. The translucent sword
shimmered in Ashura's hand, she entered the ice castle.
"Ashura... Ashura", said Yasha-ou.
"Stop saying her name! You can't say anyone's name but mine!",
Aizenmuyo yelled.
"Ashura... Ashura...", he kept saying.
"I won't let anyone come between us!", she said dangerously.
"Yasha!", another voice called.
Aizenmuyo was shocked, she turned around to meet the one called Ashura.
"You can't have him!", Aizenmuyo hissed.
"Give Yasha back!", Ashura yelled.
"You can't have him!", she hissed again.
Aizenmuyo raised a hand and dropped it. A demon serpent appeared
out of thin air, heading right for Ashura. Ashura swung Shurato. The
serpent split in half, burning away. Aizenmuyo was shocked.
"No, no! I won't give him up! Yasha! Kill her! Kill her!",
Aizenmuyo commanded.
The ice prison began breaking away. Yasha-ou fell to his knee, one
hand on Yamato.
"Yasha!", Ashura called.
She ran towards him, but skidded to a stop when she saw the look in
his eyes. Ashura jumped out of the way just as Yasha-ou swung Yamato down,
sending a blast of ki.
"Yasha! What's wrong?!", Ashura asked.
He didn't answer. Yasha-ou swung his sword twice, drawing blood
from Ashura. She knelt down to the ground, weak. She stared at his face.
Susan could see what was going on. She had remembered everything
now, the past and the future. But something was wrong, Yasha-ou was
supposed to snap out of his trance.
"Yasha...!", Ashura called.
Yasha-ou stared at the girl on her knees. 'What was holding him
back?' Yasha-ou raised Yamato to the air.
