Chapter 5: To Be, Or Not To Be
"Changing the storyline is definetly a serious matter... but, I
don't think we should be messing around with destiny and all that fate
crap.", said Susan.
"But I think it would be better this way... Ashura-ou doesn't have
to die.", Hiyana argued.
"It was meant to be, Hiyana. I mean it, let's not talk about
changing the storyline, what if something goes wrong?", Susan asked.
"I just don't want Ashura-ou to die...", Hiyana said sadly.
"I don't either, but, that's the way it has to be.", said Susan.
They were silent for awhile, the dark castle quiet and serene in a
way. Susan stood up from the chair and stretched, yawning.
"Well, I'm ready to call it a day.", said Susan.
"Yeah, I'm going to bed, good night.", said Hiyana and she walked away.
Susan sat down again, letting Hiyana leave. She slumped onto the
table, letting her head rest in her arms.
"What did I ever do to deserve this...?", Susan asked herself.
She soon grew drowsy and fell asleep. Yama, who happened to be
passing by, spotted Susan. He walked over to her, thinking she was awake.
"Susan?", he called.
There was no answer as he saw her sleeping soundly. She seemed so
peaceful. Yama smiled and lifted her into his arms, carrying her upstairs.
Her weight shocked him. She was exquisitely light compared to the strong
outer shield she seemed to reveal. And she was pleasant to look at, her
features were soft and finely shaped, her body warm against his. Then he
felt a presence.
"Yama, is that you?", asked Ashura-ou.
"Yes.", Yama answered.
"Who is that?", Ashura-ou asked as he came closer.
"It's Susan, she fell asleep downstairs.", Yama explained.
Then Taishakuten appeared, almost out of nowhere. He approached the
two silently and gazed down at the woman in Yama's arms.
"A concubine, Yama?", Taishakuten asked.
Yama blushed.
"No, I was just going to put her in bed.", he corrected.
"Taishakuten...", said Ashura-ou.
"I have to admit, she's quite something... powerful, beautiful, and
sometimes arrogant...", said Taishakuten, smiling in a somewhat evil way.
"She's Kuyou's guest.", said Ashura-ou.
"I know. She and her friend have decided to fight alongside me and
my men.", said Taishakuten.
Yama was silent as he opened the door to her room. He swept in,
still carrying her, and walked over to the bed. He laid her down carefully,
so not to awaken her.
"You treat her like a child, Yama.", said Taishakuten.
"So what if I do?", Yama asked, tired of his silly games.
Ashura-ou stared at the sleeping woman, she was strange yet he felt
joy when he saw her. Was he beginning to have feelings for her? He shook
the idea from his mind and turned to Taishakuten who was watching him all
the while. Taishakuten smiled.
"You have an interest in her, Ashura-ou?", Taishakuten asked.
Ashura-ou said nothing and looked away. Taishakuten walked over to
Susan and looked her over.
"As beautiful as she is deadly... such loveliness...", he whispered.
"We should leave.", said Yama, feeling a pang of jealousy.
They left the room silently and left a sleeping Susan snoozing.
The next day.
"*SIGH* Wow, another beautiful day! Time for morning workout!",
said Susan as she got up from her bed and washed up. She ran downstairs and
into the audience room. She waved to the emperor and turned towards the
door, but before she left, something caught her eye. She looked down.
"The Ashura castle gateway...", Susan sighed.
She knelt down and ran her hand over parts of it. Marveling at the
details.
"Awesome...", she gasped.
"Susan?", called Hiyana.
Susan turned around and almost choked. Hiyana was dressed in a
little dress, all pretty with jewels and necklaces. Stunned, Susan walked
to her slowly.
"Uh, Hiyana, are you feeling alright?", Susan asked.
"Do you like it?", she asked.
"I... it's nice. But, why are you wearing this on a day like
this?", Susan asked, puzzled.
"I picked out this dress for the celebration tonight.", said Hiyana.
"Wait a minute... what celebration?", Susan asked.
"Something honoring Kisshouten, the emperor's daughter.", answered
Hiyana.
"Today!?", Susan asked, surprised.
Hiyana took Susan by the hand.
"Now come on Susan, I'll get you a dress.", said Hiyana, smiling.
Susan jerked her hand away from Hiyana.
"Are you sure you're feeling alright? You don't seem like yourself
today...", Susan said suspiciously.
"I'm feeling fine!", Hiyana said naively.
"Yeah right, and I'm supposed to believe you just like that. Come
on, tell me what's wrong... or maybe what you're trying to hide...", Susan
urged.
"W-what could I be hiding?", she asked, hesitantly.
"Hiyana...", Susan said, tapping her foot, "You're lying..."
"N-no I'm not.", she said, blushing.
"You know, you're really bad at lying. So just tell me, besides,
what could I to do to you?", Susan asked.
Hiyana looked around anxiously and whispered.
"Last night, I saw three men in your room.", she whispered.
Susan lit up.
"Ah, let's just keep this as our little secret, because I remember
falling asleep downstairs... they must have brought me to my room, that's
all.", said Susan.
"Yeah, so tell me all about it.", said Hiyana, turning the questions
on Susan.
"Um, didn't you say you wanted to show me something?", Susan said,
laughing stupidly.
"Oh yeah, come on.", said Hiyana, taking Susan's arm.
"Uh, good morning!", Susan said to the emperor.
"Just wear this one!", said Hiyana as she handed a bunch of clothes
to Susan.
Susan sighed, she hated it when it came to dresses. She slipped on
the dress and smirked.
"Yuck, what the hell is this?", she asked and took it off.
"How about this one?", Hiyana asked.
She handed Susan a long white dress and her face lit up. Susan put
it on and smiled as it fit perfectly.
"Okay, now let's go downstairs.", said Hiyana.
"...uh... oh no. I can't go downstairs in this.", Susan said shyly.
"Come on, it's looks very nice on you.", Hiyana assured.
"You owe me.", Susan mumbled as she was led out by Hiyana.
As they descended down the stairs, people and servants gazed at the two.
God I feel so stupid, Susan thought. She didn't think she could be
more nervous. They went to the emperor and stood by Kuyou.
"You look splendid, Susan. You too, Hiyana.", said Kuyou, smiling.
"Heh, aheh... well...", said Susan.
"Thank you, Kuyou.", said Hiyana.
Many people began to fill the room as they arrived, dressed nicely.
They talked and laughed. In the background, they could hear music from a harp.
"Listen, I think that's Kendappa-ou who's playing her harp.", said
Susan.
"She's good...", said Hiyana.
"Susan...", said a voice from behind.
She blushed and turned around. She blushed even more when she was
face to face with Yama.
"Uh, hi Yama.", said Susan.
"I just wanted to tell you... um, you fell asleep last night and I,
uh, brought you to your room.", he stammered.
"Um, yeah. Thanks.", said Susan.
Susan looked around for Hiyana. She had disappeared.
"Oh, yeah, she's can be immature sometimes.", Hiyana said from afar.
Susan anger and embarrassment swirled, boiling. She went over to
Hiyana and found her 'entertaining' other people. Hiyana saw Susan and
crept away. But she ran right into her.
"So, Hiyana... what's this you were saying?", Susan asked.
"Ah, aheh, look Susan, I wasn't even talking about you.", Hiyana
stammered.
"Mm hm, I think you actually like prancing around in that little
outfit of yours, like some kind of princess.", Susan mocked.
"Oh, don't hate me because I'm beautiful.", Hiyana shot back.
"Oh, hohoho, so that's it. Don't think too highly of yourself.",
Susan argued.
"Oh yeah?", Hiyana asked.
"Yeah.", said Susan.
They looked around.
"Let's take this outside then.", said Hiyana.
"I look foward to it!", said Susan.
They walked outside swiftly.
"What's all the commotion about?", asked Tentei.
"Seems that Susan and Hiyana are at it again.", said Kuyou.
"Great, entertainment.", said Tentei as he followed.
Outside, Susan and Hiyana took their places.
"You skipped out on our daily duel this morning, we'll have it
now.", said Hiyana.
"You don't have to ask me twice.", Susan said, cockily.
They fell into their stances, gathering their ki. Then Hiyan sprang
at Susan with a fist.
"Hi-yah!", shouted Hiyana as she smashed her fist into Susan.
Then she notcied Susan vanishing.
"! An illusion!", said Hiyana, shocked.
"That's right! Shugekidan!", Susan shouted.
"Burn Knuckle!", Hiyana countered.
Their fists blazed and smashed into eachother. They seemed to
freeze in midair. Then they fell, Susan landed the opposite of Hiyana,
their backs to eachother. Then they stood up and kept a distance, building
their ki again. Susan struck first as she jumped into the air at Hiyana.
"Ryuseikyaku!", she shouted.
A strange dusty sparkle surrounded Susan as she struck with her
jump-kick. Hiyana dodged, jumping backwards.
"Deadly Rays!", yelled Hiyana as she formed her fingers into a ring,
aiming at Susan.
A couple of light beams shot out at Susan, but she dodged. Susan
landed on the ground and jumped away, avoiding the other beams.
"Power... Wave!", Susan shouted.
She smashed her fist into the ground and a bolt of light splashed
through the ground, heading for Hiyana. Hiyana couldn't escape this attack,
the only way was to block it. It was powerful, but she was able to block it
as it passed. Then Hiyana stood up.
"You win, today. I don't want to entertain these people with my
business.", said Hiyana as she patted the dust from her dress.
Susan stopped her ki from building her ki and relaxed.
"But that won't mean I'm not intent on beating you in a match one
day.", Hiyana added.
"Heh, I'll be ready.", said Susan.
One week later.
"Taishakuten, I have something to tell you.", said Shashi.
They were alone, just the two of them.
"What is it?", he asked.
She came closer.
"If I tell you the weakness of the Ashura clan, will you make me
your empress?", she bribed.
Taishakuten perked up, interested.
"Tell me...", he said.
"Kuyou, are you going to Yasha village in the north?", asked Susan.
Kuyou nodded.
"Yasha-ou, isn't it cold up there?", Susan asked, curious.
During the past week, Yama had become king of the Yasha clan. His
father had chosen his half brother at first, but apparently he didn't want
to be leader so he went away, or so they were told. Yasha-ou had begun to
visit Zenmi castle more often than usual, partly because he had taken an
interest in Susan. But she had no idea about this, and treated Yasha-ou
like a good friend.
"Somewhat.", he answered.
Hiyana and Susan, fortunately, had made up and became friends again.
Ashura-ou had begun to spend more time with them also.
"Maybe we can go sliding!", said Hiyana, excited.
"...uh, we're not going, remember?", said Susan.
"...Oh, yeah, I forgot...", Hiyana sighed.
They waved as Kuyou and Yasha-ou left. Then the doors closed and
they were left alone. Susan put her arms over her head and sighed, walking
away. Hiyana ran after her.
"Hey, wait up.", she said.
Susan stopped. Hiyana stood in front of her.
"What's up?", Susan asked.
"We have to talk about the demon thing.", she said.
Susan sighed, she hated this subject. But she had to go through it.
"What about it?", she asked.
"I don't know if I want to...", she said.
"Well, I can do it alone too y'know.", said Susan.
"I know, but... I just don't think...", Hiyana hesitated.
"Just leave it to me.", said Susan.
"...I hope so...", said Hiyana.
Just then, Ashura-ou walked in, ever so graceful, he glided to them.
"Susan, Hiyana...", he said.
"Hey, Ashura-ou, what are you up to today? Been thinking about some
'crime' you're about to commit?", Susan asked.
He seemed to hesitate for a bit.
"I don't know what you're talking about...", he lied.
"Yyyeeah, anyway... where's Tai?", Susan asked.
"He should be around here somewhere...", Ashura-ou answered.
"Ahem, I'll just, um, leave you two to your conversation and, uh, go
upstairs.", said Hiyana.
She walked away, leaving a confused Susan staring after her.
Ashura-ou cleared his throat, trying to get her attention.
"You say something?", Susan asked.
"Ah, well, I wanted to talk to you about something...", he stammered.
"Well, fire away.", said Susan.
Ashura-ou looked at Susan strangely. Susan slumped, he didn't get it.
"I mean, go ahead, tell me.", she translated.
"Oh, yeah, um... I was wondering if we could talk somewhere
private...", he stammered again.
"Uh, lead the way.", said Susan.
He led her into a secluded place, it was quiet, very quiet. In the
room, Ashura-ou faced Susan.
"Um, why's there such a serious expression on your face? Oh, I
know, did Shashi do something this time?", Susan asked.
Ashura-ou seemed to blush uncontrollably suddenly, and hesitated
frequently.
"I-I... how... that is, how is it that you... ah, know so much about
me?", he asked.
"I don't really know what you're talking about...", said Susan.
Instinctively, he gripped her shoulders, gently. Susan's face began
to grow hot.
"Um, you're not coming on to me... are you?", she asked.
"I... I just... ", he stammered.
Just then, as if by cue, Taishakuten strolled in. He stopped,
staring at Ashura-ou and his grip on Susan. Ashura-ou jerked his hands
away, embarrassed.
"Taishakuten...", said Ashura-ou.
"Ashura-ou... what are you doing to her?", Taishakuten asked.
Ashura-ou somehow, managed to stay calm.
"Nothing, we were just talking.", he answered.
"Does talking require touching?", Taishakuten asked, a hint of
jealousy in his voice.
"Wwwaait a minute here... someone tell me what this is all about?!",
Susan asked, annoyed.
"Susan, restrain yourself...", Taishakuten warned, adding a whisper,
"or I will have to do that personally..."
"What did you say?", Susan asked, clueless.
Taishakuten approached them, closer and closer.
"Taishakuten, we weren't doing anything.", said Ashura-ou.
"Sure you were...", he said, not looking at him.
He just stared at Susan. Boldly, she stared right back at him with
no sign of backing down. Then he smiled.
"You're brave...", he said.
"Hah, actions speak louder than words...", said Susan.
He smiled again, enchantingly this time. Susan felt swept away.
Then he leaned down and whispered something into her ear.
"You and I... we could--", he stopped as he noticed the way
Ashura-ou was looking at him.
"Taishakuten, if it's okay with you, I'd like to hear what you have
to say too...", said Ashura-ou, curiously.
Taishakuten straightened, and gazed at Ashura-ou lingeringly.
"Ashura-ou...", he whispered in a rather unusual way.
He turned to Ashura-ou, facing him. He smiled again. Susan stared
at the two, obviously something was going on here...
"Taishakuten...", said Ashura-ou, his features softening.
Taishakuten went to securely lock the door. Susan panicked, her
guard raising. He went over to Ashura-ou and ran his hand through
Ashura-ou's sleek hair. They seemed to stare at eachother for an eternity,
like lovers, or so Susan thought.
Then they turned to look at Susan, their eyes beckoning her...
TO BE CONTINUED...
SIGH, BIG LONG SIGH... Damn that was eye straining... I'm almost to the
