hihi!!! Here you are...I suppose I better post this
beast... ^_^
wow! my second Subaru and Seishirou ficcie! Yay! I
don't really have that many warnings for this
chapter...the lyrics are from Ani Difranco's "What if
No One's Watching?" From her album, "Imperfectly".
Ani is a goddess! And CLAMP owns Subaru and
Seishirou...however, Angel Miri is *my* muse...and
Fate is an original character...enjoy!
Also, I'd like to thank my wonderful beta reader/
editor/ all around smart guy Johann Chua! Without his
help, I'd be lost..and would have lots of stupid
mistakes. Lotsa chocolate-covered bishoujos to you!!

part 1: What if no one’s Watching
presented by Miriya Valentine

Life is, in itself, an irony. And by that self-same
token, perhaps it can be assumed that God is also an
irony, a beautiful and awesome paradox. God is
portrayed as a loving parent, stern disciplinarian,
and merciful lord, offering holy salvation to those
who would seek it. And it is through that love and
discipline that God teaches the lessons one must
learn, in the end taking those who are righteous to
live in that heavenly realm...
But what happens when a force as strong as Destiny
chooses her time to strike, recklessly swaying the
chances for someone to attain that long-sought
salvation?
What happens when there is no choice, no innocence to
lose?
Can Fate be as kind as she is cruel?
Always, *always* there must be the balance...and Fate,
it may seem, has a most interesting sense of irony as
well.

~and I think,
what if no one's watching
what it when we're dead, we're just dead
what if it's just us down here
what if god ain't looking down
what if he's looking up instead~

"What you ask of me is most unusual, angel...even for
you." Fate smiled mischievously, twirling a strand of
iridescent, pearl-like hair thoughtfully around a
slender finger. To a mortal, she seemed no more than
thirteen or fourteen--but she had ageless eyes,
perhaps even more so than the red-haired angel before
her.
"But Fate... 'tis not fair--nor is it right. Their
lives were destroyed long before they were born..."
"So?" The white-haired girl giggled, "aren't there so
many like that? What differences does *this* case
make?"
The angel ruffled her wings in exasperation.
"Because, for one, I have been here but a little
while, and for another, I've encountered them both
during my watching, and for the sake of returning a
favor, I wish to help them. Does that satisfy you?"
Another giggle. "I know, Miri, your intentions are
pure, as always...but Sakurazukamori is a damned man.
What, with all the blood he's spilled in his somewhat
short life...you want to admit that into the celestial
gates?"
"And you had nothing to do with that?" Miri snapped,
lavender eyes flashing somewhat angrily.
Fate bowed mockingly. "Ah, I am a fickle mistress,
they say..."
"But what in the hells were you thinking? Sending the
soul bound even in *this* realm to the Sumeragi into
the womb of Sakurazukamori? Are you trying to
supercede the Master?"
"Haven't you ever heard of Romeo and Juliet?" Fate
asked innocently, "I just wanted to see if it would
work outside of the stage."
"How can I change it?" Miri asked abruptly.
"You can't...unless I find it interesting enough to
pursue."
The angel's wings drooped in despair, Fate chuckling
at her. "Now, now....don't get too dejected...you
know how much I love a good game," green eyes lit up
mischievously, "I know...for the sake of irony...how
about a little bet? Mmm?"
The angel's head raised. "The stakes being...?"
"I've always wondered what would happen if the hunter
were to indeed become the hunted...in an emotional
sense, of course...For all fairness' sake, I'll give
exactly one year, as stated by Sakurazukamori
himself."
"Sakurazuka..." Miri corrected absently.
"One year, angel, to make the hunter and prey truly
love each other, in every sense of the word. If you
accomplish this, you will return with them both. But
if not--if you fail to do this thing...your Fate will
be the same as Sakurazukamori's.
The angel stared. To lose the bet would be to lose
their souls...."I accept."
All traces of childishness left the younger-looking
spirit's face, an almost cruel glint in her eye. "So
be it." Her voice was quiet, and terrible. "Speak
nothing of these terms, angel...and have fun..." with
one last giggle, Fate was gone.
With a slight frown, the angel turned away, heaving a
quiet sigh. //I believe in them...and I believe in
the power of Love.//
Another, a dark-haired angel, was soon at her side.
So lost in thought, Miri didn't even notice until the
stranger let out a quiet sigh.
"Who are you?" Miri asked. The girl certainly looked
familiar...perhaps from another life? She was dressed
outrageously for an angel, nothing like the pristine
white Miri wore.
She giggled, dancing emerald eyes eternally sixteen,
gleaming with the sense of promise and hope that never
died within her... "My name is Sumeragi Hokuto. I've
come to thank you for what you're doing for
Seishirou-san...and my brother. I wish I had the
courage to confront Fate like that..."
"Hokuto?" Miri's lavender eyes widened in surprise
and sudden recognition. "Hokuto Sumeragi...the one
Sakurazuka killed so long ago. You know, I'd be lying
if I said I'm not surprised you bear him no ill will.
And I know that it was never in his hands..."
Hokuto smiled, eyes flickering in remembrance. "Ah,
yes...I knew it had to be done. I had no idea Fate's
hold on their souls...and mine as well. How cruel she
is...It should have been me to do this, Miri."
Miri looked at her. "Nay, Hokuto...someone has to
watch out for Subaru if we fail..."
"...If we fail..." the dark-haired angel repeated
quietly, emerald eyes clouding over momentarily, as if
in secret fear.
"Have faith in them, Hokuto," Miri whispered quietly,
lifting her head to face the endless white that
surrounded them, "it’s all we have. I’ll only be
there to watch...it’s all up to them, now."
"I do. I’ve always believed in them...Subaru-kun and
Seishirou-san both. I know we’ll win." Hokuto’s
voice was filled with a proud, quiet kind of wonder,
and Miri realized exactly how much this vibrant young
angel *did*.
"Then they can have no better help. I must go, my
friend...they’re waiting...and in one year’s time, we
will all return to you...I’ll bring them both back to
you. Until then..."
Hokuto nodded. "Best of luck. I’ll be watching you
all...goodbye..."
The red-haired angel smiled, raising a hand in
farewell to her companion...and was gone.

So...did you like it? C & C, onegai!
*snickers* I think it's gonna get dark...and I'll post
more as soon as it comes back to me...
Angel Miri: How nice of you to tone me down...
me; *sighs* You're too rowdy. Angels are suppost'a
be...well, serene, I guess. ^_~
