Cat's Eye
A fanfic by Epeeblade
The kitten huddled shivering in the cold morning air. Its eyes
glittered unlike any other cat's, looking almost purple in the
sunlight. Subaru felt sorry for the poor thing and scooped it up,
rubbing his cheek against its sable fur. The kitten had a bandage
over his forehead. He ran his gloved finger against it gently. "Poor
thing, are you hurt?"
And since he was already on his way to Seishirou-san's, it made all
the sense in the world to take the cat to the veterinary clinic.
After all, it wouldn't be the first stray he had brought to the
tender care of the Sakurazuka clinic.
"Ah, Subaru-kun! Where's your sister?" the friendly vet greeted as
the shy teen entered the exam room.
Subaru bowed politely, "She should be on her way here." The kitten
had been clutched in his arms, underneath the folds of his jacket.
Now he offered it to Seishirou-san. "I found him, is he sick?"
The vet picked up the cat, brushing his finger across the bandage.
The kitten pulled back and hissed. "Ah, he doesn't like that, does
he?" Seishirou put the cat in one of the cages that lined the wall of
the room. "It doesn't look like anything serious, so I'll have a
closer look at him later. Now let's go see if we can meet Hokuto-can
on her way!"
Subaru nodded enthusiastically, following the older man out of the
examination room.
Meanwhile, in the cage, the kitten's eyes glowed with an unearthly
light.

Much later than evening, long after closing time, Seishirou returned
to the clinic. He flipped off his wire-rimmed glasses and tossed them
on the exam table. Then he pulled on his vet's lab coat. This could
get quite messy.
Seishirou looked over the rows of cages, trying to pick one for the
ceremony. The dark magic he dabbled in required blood for blood. Ah
yes, the kitten Subaru-kun had brought in earlier. No client would
miss the tiny creature. And Subaru-kun would be so delightful in his
sorrow at learning the tiny creature he had rescued had passed in the
night.
He pulled the kitten out of the cage, "So, kitty-chan, ready?" he
smiled at the creature, though his smile was twisted and sinister.
The kitten glared at him and if he didn't know better, Seishirou
could swear he saw anger within those purple eyes. It's the
ridiculous bandage, he thought, and moved to remove it from the
creature's forehead.
A shaft of light emanated from the cat's forehead, engulfing
Seishirou. He dropped the kitten in shock and fell to his knees in
pain. Something . . . was happening to him.
A voice echoed through the exam room. "You've destroyed one of my own
for the last time, Sakurazukamori. Remember this – Bast always
answers her children."
The light focused on the man in the center of the room, as he seemed
to grow smaller and smaller. Soon all that was left in the tiny
circle of light was a dark colored cat with golden eyes.
And the kitten had disappeared.

During the night the Sakurazuka veterinary clinic burned to the
ground, although miraculously, all the animals within escaped safely.

Subaru and Hokuto Sumeragi stood in front of the ruined clinic, with
the rest of the crowd that had gathered to witness the misfortune.
"Don't worry, Subaru, I'm sure he's ok." Hokuto comforted gently.
They had only known the gentle vet for a few months, but he had
already had become a part of their lives.
A mewing at his feet drew Subaru's attention to the cat rubbing
against his leg. Subaru bent and patted the tiny creature's head.
"Who do you belong to?" he asked lifting the cat into his arms. The
cat snuggled against him, almost frantic for contact with Subaru's
body. It reached up and licked at Subaru's chin. "How cute!"
"Excuse me, sir." A tiny voice caused Subaru to look down again. A
young boy stood there, looking up at him with big violet eyes. Those
eyes were blurry with tears. "Have you seen a little puppy? I found
him and we brought him here, but now he's gone."
Subaru took in the boy and the slightly taller boy who stood slightly
behind him. "I'm sorry, I haven't." Subaru looked at the cat in his
arms, knowing he couldn't possibly keep it, not with his hectic work
schedule. "But would you like a kitty?"
"Really?" the young boy gasped, "But isn't he yours?"
Subaru shook his head. "Oh no. But he would be perfect for you." He
placed the cat in the boy's arms. The cat glared at Subaru with
hungry amber eyes, then yawned and relaxed, curling up in the boy's
embrace.
"Thank you!" the boy bowed and then hopped away, still hugging the
cat. "Look, Fuuma," he said to his friend. "He said I could keep him!
I'm going to name him Potchi."
"That's a dog's name, Kamui!"
"That was sweet," Hokuto hugged her brother, watching the antics of
the two young boys.
Subaru shrugged, "He would have wanted me to."
The cat mewed softly in Kamui's arms, then snuggled closer to the
boy. He was content; after all, it was destined for Subaru and Kamui
to meet again.
