Happiness
by Ginga
It was a warm day in Kyoto. The sun was shining on the city making many of the
building's windows glitter. Small breezes glided past a small shrine that stood
in the big city. The shrine's composure was old and beautiful, but something
about it made it stand out. It was the girl who ran in front of the building.
The girl was very young, only six years old. She had short, black hair that
came to her eyes. Her eyes were exceptionally beautiful. They were a dark
emerald color, which was not very common among the Japanese people. She seemed
very innocent and carefree until her mother's voice broke her laughter.
"Kuto-chan, time to come in!" The young woman said from the steps of the house.
"Okaa-san, why?"
"You have to study, and we're having dinner soon." The woman smiled and put her
hands on her hips.
The younger girl sighed and answered, "Alright."
As she walked by her mother, the girl looked up and smiled. "You know,
Okaa-san, it's only two more days till my birthday!"
Her mother's eyes grew wide, then darkened. "O...Of course it is, how could I
forget! Now go inside. Dinner will be ready in about two hours." She forced a
smile for her daughter, who was now walking through the door.
Then the woman's eyes filled up with tears. It has been six years since it all
ended, since it all came together. She walked over to a nearby Sakura tree and
knelt by it. Sakura petals caressed her cheek as they fell. She remembered the
pain as if it was yesterday...
Yuzuriha got out of the hospital bed. She had received many cuts from her
former friend Fuuma, and was healing from both cuts and heart. She walked
slowly to a chair near an open window. A soft breeze brushed against her face
as she gazed at Tokyo.
It was so beautiful, the city and the people who lived there. It was a wonder
how so many different people could join together to make a city like this
possible. All these people... she was supposed to save them from pain and
death.
"Yuzuriha-chan," a familiar male voice broke her concentration.
Yuzu turned her head to face the young man that stood in the doorway. She
smiled slightly and returned to her frown of misery.
"Is there something wrong? I've never seen you like this before." Her visitor
entered the room, but stayed closer to the door.
A tear rolled down the inugami master's cheek. She gave a quick sigh and turned
toward her visitor. "I'm sorry, Subaru-san. It's just...well everything is
falling apart in my life. Everything, everyone; it's all too much." Yuzuriha
then gave a small, but painful smile to the Sumeragi.
Subaru strides were slow when he moved himself towards Yuzuriha quietly. There
was something uneasy in Yuzuriha's voice. She sounded so mature, something he
hadn't expected from the girl. 'She was always so cheerful, but know something
in her heart must have changed. Something that had effected her emotionally.'
Subaru thought, as he pulled a chair next to her.
Yuzuriha turned her head and again was facing the window. Tears fell constantly
as she gave a soft chuckle and turned back towards Subaru. "I don't think I'll
ever be truly happy, or at least fall in love. I...I mean, I have fallen in
love, but it was just with someone who didn't love me back." She blushed
slightly and stared at the floor as if she were ashamed.
Subaru lifted his hand and gently put it on Yuzu's shoulder. "I understand."
Yuzu's eyes widened, she quickly turned her head to face Subaru. His eyes
darkened as uneasily shifted his gaze. She looked up at Subaru’s face and gave
him a whole-hearted smile. "Are you alright, Subaru-san?"
Subaru’s gaze turned back to Yuzu and again downcast. He gave a loud sigh and
said with a weak tone, "I’m not really sure. Sometimes, I think my life would
just be easier if I ended it right now."
Yuzu gave a sharp gasp and yelled in a strong voice, one she rarely used, "What
are you thinking! If you were gone, the people who know you would be so
depressed! I don’t know what I would do without you, Subaru-san! You should
never scare me like that again! I don’t want to see you kill yourself just
because of mistakes from the past! The future holds so much for you, please
don’t throw it away!"
Subaru’s eyes widened, something came over him. The strength of her voice, the
small, glittering tears falling from her dark brown eyes, and the small flushed
look Yuzu had stirred something in the onmyouji’s heart.
He pulled closer his chair closer to Yuzu and placed one hand on her cheek. He
then brought his mouth closer to her ear and whispered, "Thank You." Subaru
then brushed his lips against hers in a soft, but deep kiss.
Yuzu’s eyes widened as the older man kissed her. His lips were so warm and his
kiss was so sweet. She closed her eyes and returned his kiss with all the
emotions that she had bottled up inside of her.
When the kiss broke, Subaru held Yuzu close to him. He sighed and looked
lovingly down at the girl. A small, soft smile crept upon his mouth. He laid
his head down on top of hers after kissing it. He finally found someone who was
just like him.
